Wissanu: Govt seeking panel members for gambling den investigations

BANGKOK (NNT) - Following a directive from the Prime Minister, the government is now seeking people to sit on the Gambling Dens and Border Trafficking Investigation Panel. DPM Wissanu said today there is no requirement for panel members to be members of the Cabinet, or strictly from outside.

The Deputy Prime Minister, said the panel won’t have legal authority to make arrests, pursue legal actions, or order the removal of any persons from their position.

The role of the probing panel will be to conduct an investigation and find the persons responsible, to be reported to the Prime Minister, after which legal action may be pursued by agencies such as the Royal Thai Police, the Department of Special Investigation, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission, and the National Anti-Corruption Commission.

This panel will focus on the main two topics, namely the trafficking of migrant workers at land borders, and the operation of illegal gambling dens, as both issues have been liked to the current outbreak of COVID-19 in Thailand.

Mr Wissanu said a timeframe has yet to be established for the ongoing inquiries of this panel, however it members will be required to make regular updates to the Prime Minister.

'legal action may be pursued'   I see the all important word 'may' in there, not 'will'.

I've got a large can of whitewash if they need some.

Hypocrite! You know exactly who is involved. There is no need for a "panel". It's just foot-dragging -- again.

Sounds like a buncha buddies getting together to drink beer at taxpayer expense

Is this going to be like trying to use ThaiTime, anywhere near but so long as it after, e.g. the tour bus will be leaving promptly at 7pm, it didn't arrive until 8pm we finally left at 9:30pm (actual experience)?

Sounds more like an informant panel, to inform on illegal activities which will then be ignored.

Forget about it.

The evidence is long gone...although I think there may be a gambling table on the side of the road somewhere that literally fell off the back of a truck...

...and you clowns want a space program to the moon?

Fail.

Or 'agreed in principal', then ignored.

Why bother? An exercise in futility.

As the Borg would say "Resistance is futile, prepare to be assimilated"

Start with experienced members who know about gambling, like police chiefs and ministers. :w00t:

But take a leaf from the "watchman"'s book and stall for as long as possible so they all have time to carefully extract themselves from the rats nest of internecine organized gambling that they're running.

Please please please, stop with crazy headlines like the 1 above.

My thoughts for a better headline.....Government seeking honest panel members for gambling den investigations.

Now if they asked for that requirement  there would be nobody on the panel.

Is this to look for gambling dens they don't have their sticky fingers in?

But not he ones that have been sent to inactive posts, they know nothing.

Literally speaking

Not sure he will get many takers to put their lives in danger as everyone know this stems right from the top.

after which legal action may be pursued by agencies that have allowed and abetted these illegal activities in the first place. :coffee1:

Depends on who is on the committee, doesn't it? See some people with names like Jimmy "Roll the Bones" Huang and Nick "Three the Hard Way" Bongthong, and we'll see what they do.

Seeking members that won't find fault with the RTP or the RTA....

Always the first step...

form a committee

Step #2, pick up the gambling table which "fell off the truck".

If they cannot find a gambling den that food vendors openly deliver to, cannot find a prostitute in soi 6, what on earth makes them actually think they can FIND the moon ?

These should have the right qualifications!!!

No doubt the incompetent panel will be investigating themselves and their cronies and therefore nothing will happen.

With no legal authority  there is small to zero chance of ever achieving anything unless the above statement excludes the right to call witnesses or have access to records  etc.In the meantime there will probably be a rash of resignations or  some form of "running from the scene of the crime" reactions.

Given the seriousness of the fact that both the covert  migrant smuggling and the gambling dens have initiated a massive potentially fatal and economically disasterous resurgence of C-19 there should be a rather more urgent and serious effort reveal the systemic corruption obviously involved.

A proposed  "Panel" formed to cater to limited expectations of the population will achieve nothing of consequence.

what about ... firing & jailing the involved police not knowing what everybody else knows

Or not being able to understand google maps. It was openly listed on there.

Reminds me of a "Yes, Minister" episode - don't form a committee if you don't know what the outcome will be.

The results of this committee may well blow this country apart - and finally lift the lid - as surely the only outcome it can come to is that: a combination of incompetence, indifference and corruption, by the military, police, and other bigwigs running their own profitable fifedoms, facilitated entry of illegal (non-quarantined) immigrants and allowed illegal, crowded, close-quarter gatherings.

{snipped}

I tend to think of a Brian Rix farce for some reason.
