Cost of Oxford - AZ Vaccine

Featured Replies

Interesting article in the Guardian on the pricing of the Oxford - AZ vaccine as noted by a 'senior health official' in South Africa. This cost being somewhat higher than that being paid by the EU.

As mentioned in the article, Oxford - AZ have yet to respond on the price disparity issue. Likely that some 'Health Officials' are making all efforts to cover their tracks on this matter. Sign of things to come in other 'closer to home' locations?

Astrazeneca UK pledged low prices on a not for profit basis.  Some countries are producing the vaccine under license, and seemingly at different prices.

Thailand has agrees to pay $7.7 for a vax they are planning to produce in the coutry. From that only 200k will be imported, for an emergency use by medics.
the south africa is paying premium price for an emergency delivery, but still $2 cheaper than thailand.
Looks, like AZ is going ro make hefty profit, despite declaring otherwise

The Guardian article actually mentions that according to the SA deputy minister of health the higher price was due to the fact that (quote): 'The explanation we were given for why other high-income countries have a lower price is that they have invested in the [research and development], hence the discount on the price,”
