Pictures of a rarely seen Siamese crocodile have been snapped by Kaeng Krachan National Park's camera traps at the Phetchaburi River upstream, near the Ban Pong Luek and Ban Bang Kloi communities on Saturday.

Kaeng Krachan National Park chief Mana Permpool said the park's effort has paid off. He vowed that they would continue their mission to conserve forests for wild animals.

According to Wikipedia, the Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) is a medium-sized freshwater crocodile native to Indonesia, Brunei, East Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

In the past, this species of crocodile could be found in water resources throughout Thailand, especially in the Bueng Boraphet swamp in Nakhon Sawan province where up to 200 crocodiles had reportedly been discovered.

This crocodile is classified as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, and is listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Great to see this.

However it is pointless me commenting here as nobody ever reads the important stuff on TV. They should have a pic of a pretty girl or an advert. for cheap beer in the article headline.

Great to see, yes - but not if you were swimming in that area. Wow!

Really good news is they dont attack humans or large animals. This species feeds mostly of fish and frogs, with the occasional bird.

Mind you I would not risk swimming with one in my swimming pool.

It's not an area where people go swimming.

It is great to see though. I seem remember about 10-15 years ago there were fears that there may only be 1 or 2 left in the wild in Thailand. Hopefully there's still a viable population out there.

Apart from dogs and cows I think all Siamese animals are rare, they're all been eaten or turned into handbags, shoes and belts.

Siamese......   I've been in Thailand for 23-years and I keep trying to find this place on a map.

any help?

Isn't that a garuwal?

Crocodile with a very low flat mouth.

I thought that they were Indian.

I my home country we have croc farms where they are bred and harvested for their meat and skin. The meat goes for about 100 Baht p/kg now. Although these farms are just profit driven, they worked with authorities and have boosted croc population in the nature and reserves so much, yearly culling is necessary to keep the ratio's down.

I fear this croc will not last long if some 'hungry' locals find out where it is. Publicity might have been the wrong type of attention.
