Pattaya: Lukewarm response to renewed opening

Picture: Sanook

Sanook reported from Pattaya saying that customers were returning to restaurants after they were allowed to open to 11.30 pm.

But the picture that accompanied their brief story was an all too familiar scene - a deserted bar area with a lady looking out forlornly.

Music Camp was open with different zones for customers so that strict social distancing could be accomplised. It was felt that anything was better than nothing.

Sukhawee Wattanasirikun the owner of a BBQ Pork store echoed this view saying he preferred to open and get some income rather than stay closed.

He was thinking of changing his opening hours as customers coming from work were just popping in and leaving quickly.

Anybody out was a local reported the media who said that many shops had decided to wait for 2 or three days before opening at all.

Sukhawee sounded a final note of optimism, however, saying that soon things would be back to normal.

The question is what normal. Before the latest lockdown Pattaya was a shadow of its former self after the first wave of the pandemic.

The resort still faces a very uncertain year.

as one who resembles that remark i have to say, unreservedly, yes.

Maybe Thais are a little more sensible than the powers that be/profit realise. Let's hope so.

i see all social distancing rules in place, not just waiting for those 5 (or 10) mln tourists to come

Lady country looking out forlornly ????

My guess is that people are being cautious. I think as the week progresses people will start returning if there are no new outbreaks and numbers remain low.

Just in time for CNW.

Is it the year of the Bat?

Even with the closures there are way too many bars, restaurants and hotels here to be supported by domestic travelers, let alone locals.

The cheapest restaurants and bottom priced bars seem to have customers.  The rest not so much.

Get away from Soi Buakhao and surrounding areas and it is deadsville.

I ate out with the GF last night in the Punch & Judy and it was busy, by the time we left there was just one table free. It's not, of course, in the tourist zone, so I guess it's the same old story; places near the beach dependent on tourists will stay in the doldrums, while those depending more (or entirely, in the case of many places on the Dark Side) on expats will continue to do OK.

There is NOTHING normal with people dying by the thousands a day. people all over the world are falling ill, losing their jobs, losing loved ones, spending their life savings and going broke, getting petrified to be outside, scared to travel, airlines now requiring PCR test before boarding, virus keeps getting mutated, vaccines  may not be able to fight these mutations, there's uncertainty in the air..

THIS is the "normal" now!

So who the hell is going to travel half way around the world to sit in a red-light street bar with a drunk, loud, needy  middle aged  sex worker if there is a deadly virus and death in the air???

The main area around Soi Buakhao was very busy I felt as I drove around it was as people who are left here got tired of all the social distancing?  In the LK Metro those outside bars were very busy zero social distance and plenty of girls.

I noticed Destiny, Paradise, Pandora, Crystal GoGo were opened. Restriction was to be music but no dancing but what I saw wasn't happening one girl I ask " what time closed " answer late!

Golden Time at 8:15 had like 20 girls sitting outside,  Black Snake closed Sugar Sugar, Seredipity continue to be close. Many massage shops opened.

W.S. entrance was closed due to underground wire work came went in from 2nd Road Soi 15, only places I saw open was Windmill, Tantra, I-Bar, 808, Russian place next door rest all closed even Pin Up.

"What I saw wasn't happening." Right. How drunk were you, anyway?

Here's the question: Was there dancing or not?
