Thai men given chance to join the Army freely

Thai men who haven’t been conscripted or recruited but want to join the military can register online via www.rcm64.rta.mi.th until February 28.

This is the first time that the Army is giving Thai men a chance to voluntarily join the services.

Colonel Sirichan Ngathong, deputy Army spokesperson, said this move is in line with the Defence Ministry’s policy to introduce reforms, adding that the aim is to recruit 10,000 military officers this year.

“Once the registration is closed, registrants must report to the selection committee on March 5. Those selected must report to the Army in May,” she said.

She said those eligible will be given a choice on how many years they want to spend in the Army based on their education background. They can also choose the unit they want to serve under based on their domicile.

“If registrants serve two years and meet qualifications, they will be given a chance to sit for entrance exams to enrol in the Army’s school for non-commissioned officers,” she added.

Guess I can signup and become a general immediately.  I need to be in a position where the graft and corruption index is the highest.  At my age you never know how long you have to make the most money, I am greedy, and live under the motto of me, me, me, me, me first, and me last.  Wait what was I thinking, Prayut might put me in the senate....

This post is purely sarcastic fictionalism, and what I heard in my dream..from what I can remember

I'm putting this photo forward for the worst photoshopping of the year award. Clearly the head and arm are from different bodies, and the background has been pasted in.

On a side note, how is it that Thai men couldn't voluntarily serve previously? The best armies are always full of willing participants.

Thanks for the heads up, initially thought the bong's drawing wrong air again!

Curious asks why Thai people can't volunteer to join the army?

If they had a chosen career path with training and promotion then I think many might consider joining the services. A reasonable salary, pension and sick benefits would take many young men off the dole queue.

That surprises me. I thought there was always the option to volunteer, before the draft. Wasn't that the reason why well-heeled guys who didn't want to be drafted "moved" to districts where the quota could be filled with volunteers?

Quick , somebody tell Neeranam, he'd hate to miss an opportunity like this.

Something wrong in this article.

Thai men over 18 can volunteer to join the armed forces. By doing so, they can reduce the term from 2 years down to 6, 12, or 18 months (depends on education level).

My wife's son joined the navy as a volunteer and served 12 months. This was about 7 years ago.

I think the only difference now is that they can go online to volunteer.

I've heard several times of boys from orphans homes and other situations with no family, no base, joining up to get a guaranteed roof over their head, 3 meals a day, clothes, and a small salary.

thailand need less soldiers, not more

Thailand also needs a proper professional volunteer army with  proper professional officers, a proper pay scale, promotions must be merit based only ( do more of the "do you know who my Daddy is"). It needs to be about the same size as the British army and ALL the old fart generals put out to grass. No businesses run by the Army but, by ridding 2/3 of it current size they can pay all their troops a proper salary.

Strict selection process as to who can stage coups and run the country! There's a trough to protect!

I think they had to first serve a term as a conscript ( they could "volunteer to be conscripted" at the draft lottery stage), then after their two years they could "sign on" for better pay and conditions, and promotion. I think conscripts could only make it as far as Lance Corporal, usually only in the last couple of months of their service. Once they had "signed on" they were pretty much guaranteed their first tape.

My stepson got LCpl for his last six months - he was thinking about staying on (he didn't) and had a cushy job as the company clerk because he knew how to use a computer. I used to call him "The Olympic Flame" 'cos he never went out!

Yeah, just what we need: 10,000 officers. So who, exactly do they plan to command?!?

I think it is a translation problem - they mean 10,000 volunteer soldiers.
