What's the skinny on 50cc motorcycles? Anyone know for sure?

Featured Replies

I believe bikes less than 50cc cannot be registered but one sees then occasionally. If they cannot be registered does this mean they can be ridden with no plate? Just for tootling around a northern town, obviously not for riding between towns. That would take a lifetime.555

It means they are illegal to ride in any case, license plate or not.

My sons Polini mini moto 49cc 2 stroke could do nearly 60 mph.

His first 50cc 4stoke for UK at 16 year could snap up 35mph. ????????

I was hoping for something more definitive like a quote or something from the actual regulations.

Hate overpriced scooters. ????

No registration/plate = not legally allowed on public roads.

You don't need the official regulation for that.

Now, how you "interpret" the law is a different matter.

Just conduct a thought experiment: If it were legal to ride something without plates on public roads and bikes under 50cc wouldn't need registration then riding an electric superbike without plates would be legal. Obviously that can't be the case.

But if you want quotes I found this translation of the Vehicle Act,  B.E. 2522 (1979) [0] which starts with the very first rule:

Quote

No person shall use an unregistered vehicle.

And there's also the ROAD TRAFFIC ACT,  B.E. 2522 (1979) [1] which in its second rule states:

Quote

No  person  shall  use  the  conveyance  without  plate  of registration  number,  plate  of  sign  of  registration number,  or  conveyance  sign  under the law on vehicle, the law on transportation, the law on wheeled vehicle, the law on towing conveyance, or the law on employed vehicle on the road.
