A leading campaigner for animal rights in Thailand and the owner of an abandoned animal sanctuary in Phetchaburi has stepped into the row about the Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo.

He has also pointed to the dire circumstances faced by animals such as elephants due to the lack of tourist cash caused by the pandemic.

Onliners had claimed that the animals and their conditions in Samaut Prakan near Bangkok were in a deplorable state.

The national park rangers went to investigate but took no action while the boss of the once popular facility defended everything about his zoo refuting all the criticism online.

The Thai media printed his assessments at face value though they published a picture of a chimpanzee on a leash on a bicycle
in a crash helmet that angered many.

Edwin Wiek - no stranger to controversy in Thailand after standing up to the authorities and injustice on many occasions told Thaivisa:

"I visited this zoo a few weeks ago and was appalled by the condition almost all the animals were in.

"Malnutrition is the main problem at the moment but the living quarters are way below any acceptable standard".

Mr Wiek, a long term resident of Thailand, said that things are getting worse for animals at the moment. He said that he was currently in Phuket and saw no way for improvement for elephants and wildlife in tourism.

Malnutrition among elephants was a particular problem as money from tourism due to the pandemic has dried up.

A video posted by his organisation in 2019 about the abuse of animals in Thailand makes for harrowing watching:

Mr Wiek has handled plenty of trouble in his time. He's a brave man, speaks fluent Thai and is honorable and respected in both the Thai and expat communities. But nothing will come of this, you appear to think every criticism in Thailand ends in defamation. It rarely does.
