Confusion still reigns about marijuana....Bottom line: smoking it to get high is illegal

Thai media Thai Rath said that confusion still reigns supreme in Thailand about growing pot.

They posed the question in their headline "Can you grow marijuana and hemp?" then interviewed Dr Supatra Bunserm of the Food and Drug Administration for clarification.

This came in the light of the availability of new strains and the start of a pilot project to grow weed in Buriram in Thailand's north east. These have only muddied the waters further, said the influential media.

Despite the removal of certain parts of the plants such as stalks and leaves from the narcotics list, they remain as having the status of narcotics, Supatra said.

Strict regulations remain in place about who can grow them.

Permission must be sought and they can only be grown for the production of certain medicines or research purposes.

In a separate report health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul put his name to five more drugs that can be produced from the plants this week.

Regulations on growing are tight. For example growers must specify the location of their plants, have a walled area and have CCTV in place to guard against illegal practices.

The bottom line is that only a negligible amount of THC (the drug that makes you high) is permissible rendering most allowable strains as merely hemp.

The possession and use of seeds, buds and flowers remains illegal - they are still considered class 5 narcotics.

So getting high in Thailand by smoking or otherwise inhaling marijuana containing quantities of THC is illegal.

And growing marijuana for recreational purposes or even growing for medical purposes without a licence could see you wind up fined or in jail.

The same goes for recreational use so be warned.

Having great experience in the twisted and strange writing they have in the Thai law

AFAIK, neither relevant law/act has been changed.

There may be a medical waiver.

And leaves, stems, roots and dirt may be legal now.

Seeds, flowers, plants, growing, possession, selling, consumption, all remain illegal.

Not sure what's up with all the articles? Maybe they generate traffic?

I think that most PR efforts by anutin, like the Buriram splash last week, just lead to more confusion, which then needs clarification.

Recreational Cannabis will be legal here shortly after the first snowfall in Bangkok.

Hey. It could happen.  Weather is pretty screwy everywhere.

I grew up on the Texas (USA) gulf coast only a quarter mile from the ocean. I lived there from first grade to high school, ~12 years, and it snowed one year in the spring.

Here's hoping you're correct!

Bingo!!!  The Friends of Anutin can grow them.  The rest of the commoners?  "Jail time for you little peoples."
In the meanwhile The Friends of Anutin flaunt their newly acquired special status by selling gimmick food items with hemp leaves.  Talk about an "in you face" moment for the Thai citizens.
The message:  Ganja for me (an the anointed Friends of Anutin) but not for thee (prison for you commoners).

The problem is that Anutin decided the easiest way to get elected was to get all the stoners to vote for him by saying he will legalize pot. Now he has to do something to pretend he wasn't just scamming them.

The way it works is, alcohol is illegal to make, sell, drink unless the government supplies it. Gambling is illegal unless the government oversees it, marijuana is illegal unless the government provides it. Don't anyone suggest that profiteering is involved, politicians are good and honorable people.

If I was a dobber type I'd be tempted to pop around to these friends and take photos of the plants they're growing when they start to flower and dob them in to the fuzz and see if anything come of it.Probably I'd get my head punched in and deservedly so.

Interesting. In my country getting high has never been illegal anywhere I know of unless you are in the US military (ucmc ) or a criminal on parole. It is selling or possessing that was illegal,  or DUI.

Spot on!I've noticed that if the governments supply gets a bit low about a ton of pot gets discovered on the banks of the Mekong river then off it goes to the government to use to make some more oil without anyone being charged.Funny that!

Ok genius. Bangkok is at 15.75 degrees latitude and even Brownsville Texas ( very southernmost city in Texas ) is 25.9 degrees latitude. It is NEVER going to snow in Bangkok. The ocean you referred to is the Gulf of Mexico and I never have heard anyone from Texas or the Gulf coast of Florida refer to it as the ocean. But the Gulf of course is connected to the Atlantic Ocean so maybe one person calls it the ocean.

Texans don't have a clue about geography.

I dont even smoke but they should just legalize it. Would do wonders for tourism. The Netherlands of the east. It's pretty much a harmless drug/plant.
