Thailand pushes cannabis as next cash crop

BANGKOK, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Thailand is promoting cannabis as a cash crop for the country’s farmers as another source of income, a senior official said on Sunday.

“Everybody has the right to grow marijuana by partnering up with provincial hospitals for medical use,” deputy government spokeswoman Traisulee Traisoranakul said, adding that those interested would have to also seek approval from authorities.

“So far, 2,500 households and 251 provincial hospitals have grown 15,000 cannabis plants,” she said. “We hope that cannabis and hemp will be a primary cash crop for farmers.”

Others that can seek licenses to grow cannabis include universities, community enterprises, medical professionals and traditional medicine professionals.

The announcement comes after Thailand last year removed certain cannabis and hemp parts of from its narcotics list.

Cannabis can also be used in food and beverages at restaurants, as long as it came from an approved producer, Traisulee said, adding that the Medical Marijuana Institute will hold information sessions for investors and the public this month.

The state drugmaker, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization, said it would buy cannabis from approved community enterprises for up to 45,000 baht ($1,500) per kilogram, for those containing 12% cannabidiol (CBD).

($1 = 29.9600 baht)

Too many are profiting off it being illegal.

The thing is it's no longer illegal, you just have to phaff about to grow it.I can see a reason for the phaffing though, it's to control the quality and keep it free from contaminants. There, I've managed to answer my own question. But contrary to previous claims by the media that flowers are illegal it turns out that if you do all the correct phaffing about one can in fact legally possess flowers and sell them. Also contrary to my criticisms I think they are "heading" in the right direction.Imagine being able to tailor the yearly supply of hemp for the yearly paper supplies and the numerous other products that can be made from hemp rather than using 4 times as much land and time it takes to grow eucalyptus trees for the same purpose!

That will make tourists come back for sure!!

Terrible idea.  It rots the brain.

Hope none of you who support it ever get crashed into by one of these buzzed drivers.

Big problem in some of the western states that have legalized it.

Public Health Ministry launches Medical Marijuana Institute

BANGKOK (NNT) - Parts of marijuana plants, including leaves, roots and stems, can now be used in food. The Medical Marijuana Institute was officially launched today to provide information about marijuana to the general public, while promoting it as a cash crop of Thailand.

The Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, presided over the Medical Marijuana Institute opening ceremony, and delivered the government’s policy on marijuana to the agency. The institute will serve as a coordination center for various agencies, and assist the public and private sectors.

With most parts of cannabis removed from the country’s illegal narcotics list, the institute will promote marijuana and hemp as cash crops, helping Thai people generate more income and paving the way for the industrial sector to develop beneficial products, such as food supplements, medicines, cosmetics and cooking ingredients.

Mr. Anutin insisted that all households have the right to grow marijuana, but they must comply with related rules and regulations concerning planting, extraction and production.

They are to work together as a community enterprise and request permission from the government. Currently, about 2,500 households and 251 hospitals in 46 provinces have started growing some 15,000 cannabis plants, which will become another cash crop for the country’s farmers.
