Melo Mania! Now Pattaya cook realizes he has valuable pearl he found ten years ago!

Another Melo pearl has surfaced this time in Pattaya.

The orange pearls that come from a snail are considered extremely valuable and have been in the news recently after two were found.

Cook Padiphat Hattadol, 57, saw the news reports and realized he might have one that he had kept for ten years on a Buddhist shelf at his house.

He took it to a gem institute in Bang Rak, Bangkok, and they confirmed it was the real deal - at a whopping 90.1 carats.

He has a certificate to prove it.

He then went to the police in Pattaya to register his property and then put it straight in a bank safe before deciding what to do next.

Padiphat told Sophon Cable TV that he found the pearl in shellfish that he bought in 2011 at the Lan Pho fresh market in Bang Lamung.

At the time he thought it was a weight put in the shell to make it heavy. That was a practice well known to be done by deceitful traders at the time.

But after being unable to cut it he thought it was pretty and put it on his "hing Phra" where it remained for a decade before the latest news reports made him think again.

It is not yet known how much it is worth but one found in the south of Thailand was reportedly worth up to 10 million baht.

Another was found on the eastern seaboard in shellfish, like in Padiphat's case, that was destined to be dinner.

I'd give it to charity. He's just being shelfish.

Make sure he's got both the keys to the box?
