The Thai authorities have arrested a 63 year old man who they say is part of a gang responsible for defrauding a bank in Chiang Mai of 90 million baht.

In a joint operation by the Consumer Protection Police Division and the Highway Police  Kritthamorn, 63, was picked up on the Friendship Highway at KM marker 75.

He was named in a warrant issued in February of last year alleging that he conspired with others to commit fraud in Chiang Mai and Bangkok using bank books to apply for overdrafts.

Essentially the bank accounts of unsuspecting people were used to support overdrafts and business loans. Signatures of the real account holders were faked.

The bank - that predictably was not named in the Daily news report -  fell for the scam and alerted the police in the northern Thai city.

The suspect however denied all the charges and said he would fight the matter and give evidence in court.

He admitted he was the person named in the warrant and had not been apprehended before.

He is now in custody as investigations continue.

Embarrassing for the bank involved, or was there some internal assistance :whistling:

Obviously he thought that his idea was legit. Good luck in court!
