Growing hemp in Thailand: Farmers warned by FDA not to be scammed as seed importation still illegal

The chief of Thailand's Food and Drug Administration has put the brakes on farmers wanting to set up cooperatives to grow hemp for commercial and industrial purposes.

Dr Phaisan Sankhum has warned farmers not to fall victim to scams.

In a story published by Daily News he warned that no one has the right to import hemp seeds yet.

Indeed only seven companies would have the correct qualifications to do so and they were as yet not approved.

He said he had heard of groups of farmers readying themselves in the provinces to launch enterprises.

With many clamoring to start growing the potentially lucrative product the regulations mean that the process is mired in red tape.

Companies importing seeds would have to inform the authorities about their sources, precise strains, how many they intend to grow and who would be buying extract for processing.

Health Minister and Bhumjai Thai party leader Anutin Charnvirakul was elected on a ticket of legalisation of hemp and ganja.

He has asked the FDA to work on permits for the importation, production and cultivation of hemp seeds.

But the red tape is clearly putting a brake on the minister's gung-ho plans as reality regarding the regulations bites, notes Thaivisa.

An elephant is actually a mouse build to Govt specifications!

Just one question.... If no one has the right to import hemp seeds yet, how did the stuff currently growing (and being used to produce whatever it is they produce) get there?

Has it not occurred to them that the existing 'wild' plant create seeds. Its how plants work...

Many Thais now want to be able to enjoy the same hemp-based cash flows that a handful of anointed Thais have been granted exclusive rights to.  Many, many, many jealous Thais will soon be clamoring about the unfairness of it all.  And they are correct.  Anutin promised that all Thais would be able to grow six plants and grow ganja like any other household herb.
So now the FDA is threatening to bust Thais who attempt to start growing hemp and then up the Thai prison population incarcerated for "drug" related crimes from 80% to more like 95% because the average Thai wants a piece of the medical marijuana profits that the government though the Health Ministry explicitly promised them?  <rhetorical question>

The Ganja Genie is out of the bottle.  Good luck stuffing him back in.  To do it they will have to go full-medieval on the Thai population.

Should be interesting:

20 years that I support my farmers for not listening to any stupid law, so it is not going to change soon ❤️
