Rescue services were called after a nine year old P3 student was knocked out near the gates of a school in Pak Thong Chai, Nakhon Ratchasima by a firework.

The incident that happened when the girl was on her way home from school on Monday afternoon has brought calls to ban fireworks of this nature known as "phlu talai".

It was lit by a 35 year old relative of a deceased person. They were sending off their relative by lighting the firework at the temple that was 500 meters away from the school.

Rescue workers found the bloodied youngster by the gates. She was later transferred still unconscious to Maharat Hospital in Nakhorn Ratchasima, reported Channel 7 news.

Other reports suggested she was still in a coma yesterday.

The police have charged the person who ignited the firework with negligence causing injury while locals have called for fireworks like this to be banned at funerals.

What goes up, must come down... but no-one worries about that.

Feel real sorry this happened to a young child whose life was dramatically changed and possibly ended by idiots who think it is okay to fire projectiles skyward.  Reminds me of those firing bullets indiscriminately during the New Years celebrations.  On a different not you need to be certified for fireworks elsewhere, and even in this country you can not fly a drone without being licensed and registered, the same needs to happen for fireworks and projectiles that go skyward.  Then those responsibly, even if an accident, should be held responsible for anything that occurs.  Most of those folks in the regulated industries in other countries pay a bond that would be forfeited if an accident occurs.
