In the autumn of last year there were news stories going around about a big bike license being required for motorcycles of 400cc or above, saying that this would take effect in a few months. The staff at a local motorcycle dealer told me that the new license is required now, but it doesn't really matter at the moment because it's 'not strict'. I asked when it would become strict and he said June.

Anyone have more concrete info? Anyone seen or acquired one of these licenses?

Last I heard was that the new law was in effect as of February. My understanding (from discussions months ago when this first came out) was that anyone without a license that wanted to ride a big bike would have to apply for the new "big bike" license as of February.

However, anyone who currently has a "bike" license could continue to use that until it expires. Then they would have to get the new one as well.

So, in theory, I am OK to keep riding until my license expires in 2024. Then I will have to apply for 2 licenses, one for "scooters" and one for "big bikes". (And if I want a car license, that would be a 3rd application and a 3rd plastic license as they, for some weird reason, won't simply endorse more than one class of vehicle on a license.)

I can imagine some professional driver running around with a wallet full of licenses. 1 for scooters, 1 for big bikes. 1 for cars/trucks. 1 for Taxis/mini-buses/Ambulances. 1 for "big" trucks.
(In Canada, there are basically 6 classes of license, from "6" (motorcycles), 5 (cars/light trucks), 4 (taxis, ambulances, buses with less than 24 passengers), 3 (trucks with 3 axles), 2 (Buses with 24 or more passengers) and 1 (semi-trailer trucks).

However, they only issue you ONE license. If you are qualified in more than one class, they simply note that on the back of the license, along with any endorsements (like Air Brake qualification) or Restrictions (i.e. Glasses).

Not sure why they can't/won't/don't do the same thing here.

I thought I'd posted the (Thai) regulations about the new license on here somewhere a couple months ago but I can't seem to find the thread. Naturally, I recall deleting the file from my computer barely a couple weeks ago (and yes, I emptied the Recycle Bin).

I may be able to find it in a Line conversation but that may take awhile to search through.

Just fired a message off to my friend at the local DLT. She replied that the new rule has not come into effect yet and no date available as to when it will.
