I have to admit, one of my greatest satisfactions in life is passing Fortuners on the highway and leaving them in the dust.

With what, a Trabant?

Many Moons ago i lived in the West Country Town of Weston-Super-Mare; or 'Weston-Super-Mud' as it was known to locals, because the shifting Mud that looks like Sand starts about halfway down the 'Beach' (Sand) and will suck anything under that weighs more than about half a kilo'.   Hence; many 'Tourists', mainly coming down from the West Midlands, would drive down the concrete ramps and onto the Sand or attempt to walk out much further than they should until they start to sink.  Subequently many people had to be rescued from certain death as the tide rose and almost weekly there would be a Vehicle submerged by the fast rising water and it was rare for a Vehicle to be 'rescued'.    All this despite huge warning notices all along the Promenade, up the length of the Pier and in the nearby Town Centre.     One of the reasons for the loss of so many Vehicles was people driving their '4X4's onto the Sand because they believed they could get out of any kind of trouble in these hyped up Macho types and they would appear astonished as they watched them sink into oblivion faster than the Titanic.

It is my belief that the only 'true' 4x4 Vehicle is a Land Rover;  just take a trip up to the works and watch them testing them on the works 'Jungle Trail' against just about every other type of so called '4x4' and see what survives by the end of the tests !

As the Australians say - If you want to go to the outback, get a Land Rover. If you want to come back, get a Land Cruiser.

The new ones are built in Slovakia.

Genuine question....what is the difference?

It's Not Equipped for Off roading.

Off road Tires /diff Locks /Winch/Recovery Equipment .

Also Need a Driver that Knows How to drive/Operate All the equipment..     Not a highway Jockey.

Usual Thai scenario. 4 Thais helping, dozens more showing their spirit by standing and watching, Thai supervisors I expect...

It's a regular accurance where I live. In fact I am sitting here watching a Fortuna stuck right now. Foot hard down digging in deeper and deeper. We have spent many a night watching  the morons trying to get out. Good fun. No sympathy.

There have been several several small 4x4s like the Fiat Panda which wasn't really an off roader

Not seen the videos then. I think there may even be a Top Gear one!

So a 4WD Fortuner is flummoxed by a bit of damp sand?

Do you understand about beach driving? Done much? Tyre pressure etc?

Check some of the reviews on Youtube change of tyres and a small lift they can be very capable. As much so as a Hilux.

Once you have driven an MB you don't ever wish you owned a Fortuner lol.

I used to drive an Isuzu MU-X and getting back into it now seems very... agricultural.

Very close to what I was thinking. In 1971 I arrived in Australia after a long overland trip.

I got a good job working for a mob called Australian Aerial Mapping and up past the woop woop near Hamersley Iron  we were doing some work for another mob , I told the boss the Land Rover wouldn't get to the mountain top , he said take my Land Cruiser and threw me the keys.  What a joy !   What a good time too.

How long have you stayed and traveled in Thailand? Not the vehicle, but it seems their height now becomes 8ft tall as their little Thai gonads imaginarily grow larger as they weirdly become hierarchy privileged when driving one. I have driven one before and don't care for them on the whole.

Exactly why I love leaving seeing them getting smaller and smaller in the rear-view.

Stepping back into a coal-rolling SUV like a Fortuner for me now is like stepping back in time to driving in Britain in the 1990's.

Unfortunately it is the other way around because they will require you to move over out of their privileged way while they attempt to reach and push down harder on the gas pedal to pass you.

Only about for decades. Did you do a scientific study of Thai testicles or is it based on personal observation. A large amount of posters on TV seem to know about these things and I always wonder why.

Well then, if you lived here for decades then either you probably don't get out much, or maybe just oblivious to the fact for where you live. I'm betting you are a smart guy and understand it is only like an analogy. But if you must know it is from real observation from many parts of Thailand over the years seeing oodles upon oodles of Thai men driving these type of vehicles and their attitudes projecting being privileged, superior and for the most part a condescending gross attitude toward most others. I don't quite understand it, but when Thai get behind a Fortuner's wheel, something changes and then they do odd stuff like what the article is about because perhaps it gives them a certain sense of entitled elite privilege because of the cost of the vehicle and a false sense of security. Sort of like some of the rednecks in the USA in their 4 x 4..

And also funny, I bought my new Isuzu MU-X recently in January, and yes a 4 wheel drive.

After I sold my 10 years old Fortuner.

I have to mention, in the Fortuner it was tuned with a "Racechip"

Unfortunately not available for the Isuzu, due to too little demand, they told me in Germany.
