I stopped drinking once ……….

I stopped drinking once,

In 1973

My principal reason,

Falling out of a tree

How I got up there

I’ve no idea

Seems a strange place

to be drinking a beer

My addled brain

tried hard to recall

how I ended up

dying from a fall

I remembered the bar

How could I forget?

Wearing no clothes

All for a bet

The rest of the day

Was a bit of a blur

Smiling faces

And a kiss from her

It started with a phone call

A meeting in the pub

Lots of beer

Rub a dub dub

We moved to the saloon bar

Of that I’m sure

I recognized

The parquet floor

Gin and tonic

And Pimm’s number one

Shaken not stirred

And I remember the fun

Seeing my mate

Glorious ted

Guzzling down beers

Standing on his head

I remember the road

The trees flying by

Flying trees?

I must be high

We went to a casino

That dealer’s face

When I showed her

A queen and an Ace

Chips in my pocket

For a wander I did go

Slots to play

Dice to throw

Free alcohol

Now that’s my kind of place

Is costs you nothing

To get off your face

It’s all coming back now

The memories are clear

Now I remember

How I ended up here

That bull was massive

He came at me

That’s how I got

Stuck up the tree

I have long periods every year when I go dry. The first week just feels so boring but after that you don't even think about it. See if you can make 3 weeks then re-evaluate how you are feeling.

After many years of regular drinking, I got on the waggon on 1st January with a big hangover from NYEve. Went three months without a drink, felt so much healthier.

Now I am back in moderation, but will get some in today for when Man City get the league this weekend! (Or next weekend if Man U don't play with the rules!   LOL )

I agree after the first (very difficult) week the boredom starts to go, but find weekends without alcohol unbearable, even after 3 months of being sober (never tried 4+ months)

Chang, Leo and Singha, are what we referred to back home as "cooking lagers". Only suitable for cooking a beef in beer casserole, and certainly not good enough for drinking.

Be inclined to agree. Just can't touch Thai beer now.

Lao Khao is not as bad as its cracked up to be ( with a decent mix like shwepps bitter lemon ) but in the end 40 degrees was just to much alcohol for my body.

So by-passing Hong Tong and Sangsom , I am now drinking Varinthip ( only seen in Big C ) which is only 30 degrees. Has a different taste to the last two and at 110 baht for a small bottle every other night is easy on the wallet.

Tell the wife you always feel frisky for other women and can’t stay away from ‘sausage’ when you’ve been drinking.....   She’ll come around sharpish !!!  ????

She will put you on an intravenous beer infusion.

In the days of strong Chang I used to have blackouts.

One morning I woke up and the gf said, "you drove the m/c into the klong last night with me on the back"

Didn't believe her, want outside and there was the m/c covered in mud.

Apparently the worst bit was the two of us dragging the m/c up the side of the klong and onto the road.

I still don't remember a thing about it.

Reminds of a time when I veered off the road at night into a paddy field. If the front wheel of my bike hadn't been covered in mud, I probably wouldn't have remembered it at all.

Now then, I'm trying to remember who the reformed drinkers are who always stick their ugly heads above the parapet to champion the banning for sale of all alcohol and consider it a sin for one to enjoy oneself with a beer or wine during & after dinner.

Not to worry, they will be along soon to preach their pious rubbish, as sure as God made little green apples ????

Not had a drink in 2 months, and I certainly wouldn't now because it's Ramadan. Maybe in July.

Only able to tolerate 72 hours alcohol free, how sad.  I suggest you look up where the next AA meeting is located and attend.

Your joining AA will serve two purposes, help you get over the need for alcohol and leave more of it for the rest of us. ????

and It was the most boring 3 days of my adult life

I haven't had one for 30 years, it was a bit boring before then but certainly not since.!

You'd be amazed how much fitter, healthier and enjoyable life is without it.!

The chang cold brew isn't bad. Neither is the San Miguel light..

I'm on Tapper xtra tonight to make up for the 3 nights missed ????

Yeah, those Tappers are nice. My corner store has Cheers with the red label, 500ml. Six percent alcohol, kinda hoppy, reminds me of cheap American beers like my dad drank, like Busch Bavarian. One is all I need to take the edge off, and relax in front of the boobtube.

7/11..

I know what you mean, its not real beer by a beer drinkers standards.

But after 72 hours of alcohol free hell a glass of bucks fizz would taste like Louis XIII to me!

At least one of my nearby 7/11s is selling Lao IPA, which is by far the closest I've found here to a proper-tasting English beer. Almost a match for the beers that Wishbeer sells for 3 or 4 times the price. Costs 65 baht, I believe (the wife, bless her, bought it for me to try). Only seen small bottles so far.
For Thai beers, I'll drink Tapper or Leo 8 which are quite similar to each other.

Tapper and Cheers Red. Very similar. Leo 8 is the same.

Would never touch Leo or other beers less than 5%, what's the point?

Leo 8 is 5.1 ???? Try it. Or go big with Tapper at 6.5.

What about bar girls? Do a lot of bar girls drink themselves to death? I was only in Thailand on vacation and it occurred to me that these girls need to drink a lot to earn a living. Must be hard on the body to spend 362 days a year in a bar?

Few do. Most go home for a week, or sometimes a month at a time.

A lot of expats end up drinking themselves to death in Thailand or Cambodia. A friend of mine dad died at age 66.

It is actually very easy to stop drinking with the help of Baclofen.

Younger co-worker / friend  retired early was going to move over here to Thailand as he had  accompanied me on trips before. Never made it died last year at age 57 in USA. I have never drunk alcohol or taken drugs so don't miss them.

I don't know about the bar girls, but i think many take yaba.  The Farang retirees have the money and too much time on their hands. They are outside of their culture and don't know what to do all day, so they end up drinking too much.  Alcohol is particularly harmful to people under the age of 18 and over the age of 65. It damages the brains.

Conclusion: People between 18 and 65 don't have brains to damage....

Well, I guess it all comes down to the amount of beer your drinking on a daily basis. If it’s just a couple of bottles it’s fine, if it’s ten or more then you’re on the road to becoming/being an alcoholic. In that case I’d do something about it because once you’re an alcoholic you can never go back to drinking alcohol once you stop because there’s no controlling it. If you get off the train to alcoholism before becoming an addict you can stop for a while and then go back to drinking reasonable amounts, i.e. a couple of bottles a night.

What's easier?

Stopping to drink for a few days or no sex?

Asking for a friend.

I don't drink and no sex either.
