BANGKOK (NNT) - National Telecom (NT) will scrap 007 and 008 international telephone call prefixes from June 1, leaving only 001 and 009 in service, in order to strengthen existing resources and management while reducing operational costs and facilitating customers via the single bill payment system.

NT vice-president Dhanant Subhadrabandhu said the move is in line with synergy between TOT and CAT after the merger into NT since Jan 7, and can save at least 12 million baht a year in international circuit rental and related fees.

He said the company will also run a discount promotion for international calls to 18 destinations with 009 prefix from May 1 to Sept 30. The 009 prefix comes with affordable international telephone service while 001 provides high voice quality service, chiefly targeting corporate customers.

Mr Dhanant said the company will enhance quality and capacity of its IDD service for large corporates through back-up international circuits while customers will also receive a single bill that involves domestic landline calls and international calls.

What a sensible thing to do.

I really couldn't understand the point in having those extra codes, as the routing and cost can be programmed depending on the country code dialled.

one of them probably started off as a Fax carrier line yonks ago?

Not really, the fax has in reality always been used on the PSTN, same as the few surviving ones still being used today.

Are there enough priests in Thailand to need a special chatline? ????

although I don't use these prefix numbers any more I bet the billing will change and it will cost more

These services use VOIP networks

Would I be right to assume that this only applies to TOT and CAT. I use 006 for True so hope it still works.

Evolving technology. I remember when I had to fax something to the US from the UK I had to go to the town's main post office to do it. Then nearly every home had a machine, and now they are museum pieces.

Yeah, not even sure where my old one is, but I've got a roll of fax paper on top of my storage shelf. ????  "For Sale" if any one's interested.
