One dead/51 others infected from Thai justice minister's Songkran restaurant party

A party organised in Sukhothai in the north of Thailand for Thailand justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin has now proved to be responsible for 52 Covid cases. 

 

One woman died in Bangkok as a direct result of attending the Songkran party on April 12th at The Tree cafe. 

 

Previously ten cases were reported including the death. 

 

Yesterday Dr Pongphol Worapani of the Sukhothai department of public health said the cluster had caused far more infections,, reported Daily News. 

 

There were 21 infections directly related to attendees at the party and these included 18 being treated in the province.

 

One was the owner of the restaurant who then infected 31 members of his own family. 

 

Three of the party attendees went to Bangkok where one woman died. Her husband was also infected as was an associate of the justice minister. 

 

Thailand's government was roundly criticised before Songkran for allowing travel and gatherings to take place, notes Thaivisa, amid fears that the festival would result in a further spike in Covid-19 cases. 

 

Clusters such as this involving senior government ministers will be seen as a huge " we told you so" moment by many.

And here I thought they Said there were to be no Songkran parties just family time....guess they fooled themselves into creating a cluster by failing to follow the directions given.  Sad justice for the foolish folks who attended the party.  No justice will be dolled out I am afraid.

but because he is the justice minister and because justice is corrupted, he will never be even reprimanded for his stupid carelessness and death.

Only now, some 20 days after this party, the mass media were allowed to report. Social media were buzzing about it at the time.

I am surprised that the media actually got to report on this, why isn't there any other ministers or government officials trying to quash this as usual ?

Yes, and like the other govt minister who denied he'd been to the Krystal probably refuse to give out a timeline. They just lie because they know they can get away with it. And they do get away with it over and over, in part because those who are supposed to protect against this corruption are as corrupt and broken (as was shown by the infamous watch case).

it was wife of one of the minister co-workers. He also got it. Can be the case she even did not attend this party, it's not outright clear from this article

We cancelled a work social event in the week prior to Songkran as cases were already markedly increasing in Bangkok.

I am not a vindictive type but this Minister needs to resign or get sacked.

People have known for over a year to avoid large public/private gatherings (and not to organize them) and that they should wear masks if attending them too. All these recommendations seem to be violated here so not a lot of sympathy from me. Just hope those not at the party and infected from spread is limited by these clowns behavior.

3 went to Bangkok and infected others. The women who died was the wife of an associate of the justice minister, that was the women that died so what about the other 2 ? Also it is unclear exactly who this associate was. It did not say a co-worker. My guess it was still 3 pretties bought in and then they returned to BKK

Like the Cambodian head of the police this justice minister should be imprisoned. Two countries, different rules for law breakers. Violating the Emergency rules and decree measures put in place falls on deaf ears here unless your a student protestor then LM applies. Sad.

Rubbish, a 24 year old lady died here only last week. They often find out also that they had othet issues only after they have died following the autopsy. And pretties with drugs in them are susceptible too.

I remember there was DJ who gave a private party and people got infected and he was fined and got jailterm too. This minister who is a public figure and must be an example for the people in the country causes more than 50 infections and 1 dead that is not acceptable,So minister resign and if there is hope for any justice in Thailand put this man in jail......

The bar managers had to do a jail term too for 3 months....

24 yo is not a teenage.

one such young in 240 dead in thailand is just exemption from the rule. 

But the article says exactly it was somebodies wife, stretching her to become a pretty is too much wild imagination
