BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has allocated an additional 12.6 billion baht from the government’s central budget to the Ministry of Public Health for its COVID-19 response, covering staff compensation and procurement of medical equipment.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul revealed today that the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) has been allocated an additional 12.6 billion baht budget from the government’s central budget to help fund the ministry’s anti COVID-19 operations.

The biggest portion of this extra funding, 6.37 billion baht, will be used to fund the procurement of antivirals such as Favipiravir and Remdesivir, as well as other medicinal products and herbal products associated with COVID-19 treatment.

A 4.54 billion baht portion will be used to pay overtime and hazard pay to healthcare workers, as well as 1.54 billion baht in funding for the operation of field hospitals, proactive testing events, vaccination sites, and laboratories.

Another 215 million baht will be reserved for investment in durable articles and construction.

The Minister of Public Health has urged the provinces to complete all disbursement processes by September, especially the overtime pay and hazard pay for healthcare workers.

Just where is all of this money coming from all of a sudden.  The last 3 days there have been stories of millions upon millions being pushed out to this agency or that agency and now this 12.6 billion dole out to MOPH.  I thought this Government was running short on funds, or did I miss a Trillion baht donation from a principal director in the country.

And the Thai baht is going up against the USD ... how / why?

If I would be a Thai citizen, I would like to know:
- how much money in total has the government already sunk into this Covid-19 abyss with ever rising figures on a daily bases?
- a tidy sum of 4.54 billion baht portion being used to pay overtime/hazard pay to healthcare workers; how many workers are we talking about?

But as a dirty farang I can just bystand and wonder, why nobody asks any questions .........

here article from 2 days ago with more details.

that's where money will be coming:

"In the meantime, the cabinet decided to set aside 12.6 billion baht, from the Central Fund, to be disbursed as overtime pay and hazard allowances to medical personnel and public health volunteers engaged in caring for COVID-19 patients between July and September.

Anucha said that the people eligible for the payments also include members of various committees, experts, advisors and outsiders who were involved in activities related to the contagion."

That clearly means, money would be squandered outside medical profession, to any civilians associated with the ministry, civil servants

The budget for this year was passed in June parliamentary seating. I believed the central budget or contingency budget was in the region of 500 billion baht which is traditional at about 16% and largest of budget allocations. I think the government is using this central budget. We can know whether they are borrowing mindlessly and over the limit by looking to the debt to GDP ratio and the rating agencies reactions. Thailand still have the foreign reserves to draw upon when needed. Thailand has the financial ability to spend but whether it’s spend wisely and corruption free is another story.
