COVID-19 contaminated waste should not be incinerated in crematoria, as it would send undesirable odours and particles of toxic gasses and heavy metals that can worsen people’s health and the environment, said Thailand’s Pollution Control Department, amid increasing unmanaged contaminated waste that has prompted many to dump them in crematoria.

 

The department is therefore seeking changes to regulations to allow COVID-contaminated waste, including used PPE suits, face masks and rapid antigen test kits, to be burned in industrial incinerators or at bio-energy plants, said Director-General Atthaphol Charoenchansa.

 

The temperatures in temple crematoria, in normal use, are lower than the 760-1,000oC generated in industrial incinerators and lack filtration systems to reduce pollution, which may endanger the health of people living in surrounding areas, he said.

Who knew there was a department for overseeing pickups never serviced in ten years; someone to oversee the broiling of smoking chickens on every corner obscuring the view of drivers; where are these officials five times a week when residents elect to burn their waste rather than tip it on a quiet soi?

I wonder how much has already been disposed of in land-fill?

Yes it's a bit confusing and I think badly written and laid out. 

 

I think this refers to last year and is the caption under the picture which is also from last year. At that time Thailand seemed to be doing pretty well although you can never be entirely confident in figures coming from the government. 

 

This year is a completely different matter.

If that's the case I strongly suspect the 'journalist' found a stock photo and inserted it into the article without bothering to read the caption....shoddy work.
