Aaditya Mattoo, the World Bank's Chief Economist for East Asia and the Pacific Region, expressed optimism about Indonesia's economy, which might rise close to 5% in 2022, at an economic update conference on Tuesday.

He remarked in Jakarta, citing Antaranews, "We are optimistic that Indonesia's economic growth next year can approach close to 5%, which is an improvement in and of itself."

He believes the government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic will be a key factor in promoting economic growth, particularly through a hybrid mobility restriction policy that strikes a balance between public health and the economy.

The government's effort for universal vaccinations since early this year is also considered to have aided the improved economic outlook.
“While the virus will not go away, these efforts can assist in reviving the economy.”

However, Mattoo warned the government that the Indonesian public still faces a number of problems, including the equitable distribution of vaccines and the funding required to carry out immunizations for the country's enormous population.

“Because this is a decentralised country, they have to do more to deal with issues like distribution and the vaccination budget,” he continued.
