PHUKET: The fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t the only factor dampening spirits ahead of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival that starts on Wednesday (Oct 6).

The recent flooding in large parts of the country, caused by devastating storms, has impacted the cost of vegetables with a rise of B10-20 per kilogram putting extra strain on vendors.

Heavy rainfall brought about by the likes of tropical storm Dianmu has resulted in extensive flooding in many areas, especially in the north, northeastern and central regions which has left many agricultural crops and vegetables damaged or completely ruined. Added to this is the complexity of actually transporting vegetables from their source location which has further increased the cost.

That was a quick reaction, any excuse to gouge.

Was at the market yesterday buying a bag of onions,

and the price of Vegetables have really risen, Onions

at beginning of last month 80 Thb  5 Kg, now 120 Thb,

the green stuff with long narrow leaves which grows

in the water (cannot think of the name) ,last time 60 Thb

a big bag, yesterday 180 -200 Thb  ! , Tomatoes 5 Kg

40 - 60 Thb , now 80 - 120 Thb, , the reason seems to

be the weather, and Vegetarian week,

Who's interested in a veg fest its a sausage fest that's required ????

Good idea,

Put the prices up for a Veg fest which is going to be poorly attended due to the pandemic, people not having money to spend , and government flip flopping.

Then, if that's not sufficient to kill it, give the public advance warning that  you are going to be charging them a lot more for anything they want to buy for the fewer in numbers that will attend.

Great marketing strategy.

I love the Veg Fest. Some of the dishes are so good I wish they'd keep a couple of veg options all year.

Got to know where to shop, though. If it looks appetising, it likely is.
