Bangkok governor turns down entrepreneurs’ outcry of extending drinking hours to 11:00 PM, easing bars and nightlife

Bangkok – Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang has turned down the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Association’s proposal to extend the legitimate drinking hours at SHA+ restaurants from 9:00 PM. to 11:00 PM. upon the country reopening.

 

The governor revealed to the press today, November 1st, that it is impossible, according to him, to extend the hours for now and the process must be done gradually and carefully until the situation is resolved and Public Health Officials can gauge the results of each easing of restrictions.

 

He said: “We will look at the overall assessment in terms of the alcohol and entertainment industry every 2 weeks. If the drinking hours affect the infection situation in some way, we have to come up with a new plan. But if there is no rise in infections and business owners and customers cooperate a re-evaluation of the hours may be considered as needed to 1 hour, 2 hours, or possibly 3 hours.”

 

When being asked what to do if alcoholic beverages were ordered and not finished by 9:00 PM., the governor stated that customers could either “1. drink it up or 2. pour it out.”

These so-called ‘public health restrictions’ are primarily a concession to the police, who have lost much of their income stream. The RTP need absurd, nonsensical rules....so they can extort money.....from people who run afoul of these absurd, nonsensical rules.

Do what they used to do [possibly still do] in pubs back home.

Call "last orders" 30 minutes before closing time.

Then "Time ladies and gentlemen" at closing time.

In my local they used to ring the bell, but you cant do that in Thailand would cost you a fortune

Oh, how I miss the days of Queen's Park Plaza, Soi 22. It's an empty lot now. My fav bar was way in the back. The mamasan would indeed call for last orders, and some would comply not knowing any better. But the rest of us would stay as she drew the curtains, leaving us to keep drinking and do whatever else with the lovely staff, until around 4 am.

It's sad what happened to that place. 15 years ago I lived on soi 22 and was captain of a pool team (the B team) for a bar right at the back. There weren't even curtains pulled and I was often there till dawn. The bar next door was owned by police who sometimes hung out there (in uniform). I drank and played pool with them often in the early hours of the morning. I was in my early 30s then though - it would kill me now! Good times.

It’s okay to have 100s packed into markets but try and have a drink after 9 pm is a no go and yet they expect tourists to come back and put up with these restrictions it’s not going to happen and the people it’s going to hurt most are the ordinary workers the governor is okay with his pots of monthly money

At 8.59 PM you have to pour it in a plastic mug or Coffee cup.

So they blame the alcohol and Entertainment even if the infections come from another channel, like immigrant workers or cultural tourists.

Any potential visitors should pay close attention to what this unelected despot is saying and read between the lines.  First, he continues to believe that public health policies will somehow rid Thailand of Covid.  Second, he intends to blame any failures of those policies on those who break these ineffective rules.  Third, he implies that a change in infection rates (which will occur, as they have occurred in every other country outside of 'Paradise' after a reopening) will result in a reevaluation...or another closing.  So, not if there's going to be another shutdown/lockdown...just who will we blame it on?  Anyone who believes the junta's propaganda that the latest outbreak was caused by a few rich guys at Krystal club are the same parrots who will believe their next lies.

 

If you want to know what an unbalanced, out of touch dictator is going to do...whether in Iran, North Korea or Thailand, just listen to what they say.  Most of the times, they will more or less just say it.

Try Soi 11 ..... there's a row of shanty-town style open-air bars with tarpaulin curtains at the front as a nod to compliance.  Looks like the old days of Soi 22.

Try Soi 7. Some of the bars from Queen's Park Plaza relocated there.
