Parliament agrees to set up "Casino Commission" - idea to get gambling money from foreign tourists gains momentum

As others have alluded to, most of the gamblers will be Thai...Most foreigners can gamble legally in their own home country, so not sure why they would come to Thailand specifically to gamble.

Also any Committee with Sira Jenjakha on it is an absolute farce. The guy is certified insane... any country where he is an MP and is selected for any serious Committee needs a good hard look at itself. Accuse me of hyperbole if you wish, but if he was in any sane country his career choices would probably revolve around the absolute bottom of the chain menial labor roles- and he might even not be up to that.

We have a little bit of a huge problem. While they throw out all of their deep rooted buddhist beliefs, they refuse to understand that the most common visitor in the casinos will be Thais.

No, it does not! It sounds honest and true. Something that all countries in the world are aiming for. To get as much money out of foreigners visiting their country as possible. It´s just that they not speak about it.

Yes, exactly like all other countries think too, but they not speak up about.

Regarding fleecing, please read above. Are you also saying it is something different with a Thai casino serving alcohol compared to a Las Vegas casino?

i don't think you can compare the two.  Nevada gaming is highly regulated.

And when the OP is about other countries I will comment upon them…

I don´t think that will be possible. You are always too busy complaining about everything in Thailand and how Thai people think so bad about us. You know, the day only have 24 h.

If the government is so concerned about gambling, why is there a 'legal' lottery.  Many Thais are eager to buy their tickets every week when it is the last thing they can afford to be spending what little money they may have gambling on the lottery.  They get their so called 'lucky' numbers from anything that makes the news and has numbers mentioned or seen in photos.  It is rare that anyone 'hits' the big one in this lottery.  They make a big deal out of winning 1000 or 2000 baht when over past weeks and months they have spent 20,000 baht on lottery tickets that were not winners.

If a casino is eventually allowed here, entry should only be permitted to those with a foreign passport.

In Las Vegas, free drinks are repeatedly offered to the players to help loosen their minds about how much money is flowing out of their hands.  Remember, when you see the pictures of the big beautiful casinos in Las Vegas much of the construction costs were born both by the losers and also by investors hoping enough money would be lost to increase the value of their investments,

If the alcohol flows freely, where are these players going to go when their money is gone?  To the highways to maim or kill more people?

respectfully vietnam.  the casinos is see along the ocean are the biggest reason i would not come to vietnam.  who is going to these casinos.  chinese?

Funny you say that.

This morning, I booked 2 weeks in Ho Tram to play some cards. I get everything fully comped and very well looked after, so for me, I don't need the pool, the beach or the buffets...

...and yes, it's 99% Vietnamese with a foreign passport, Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese with a few Westerners. It would not be a good vacation for most Westerners.

...and if Pattaya got a casino, it would also not be a great place to vacation either.

Always?

Everything?

Now that is just not true and you know it...

And what exactly am I complaining about?

I simply commented on what was said in the article.

It will make money for Thailand, like many countries that have them.  I personally like them, once inside it's up to you how much you want to lose. But great food, entertainment, clean and the beers are lovely and cold. ????????

Or rather it should read " the idea of fleecing tourists of their money in gambling is bloody good idea"

Will they serve alcohol in them casinos while they fleece them i wonder? as you know a drunk tourist easily parts from his money...

Heaven forbid that they should serve it between the hours of 2pm - 5pm though.

Their obvious prime target will be the Chinese who are voracious gamblers. Won't it be ironic that once the borders open up we could see the Chinese flocking to Thailand to gamble legally whilst Thais are hopping across the border to Laos and Myanmar to do the same.

I’d like to see a joint Chinese casino with buttet lunch. It would be a riot

China is cracking down strong on gambling. They have already decided to stop the ravage that was going on in Sihanouk before Covid set it.  Those Casinos ruined a tourist resort , and robbed locals of their land and jobs. It’s desolation now.  Hopefully this won’t happen in Thailand, and the outside casino mafia get a hand in.  I’ve nothing against the legal casinos that are run in most European countries, usually quiet , smart places with no hint of danger. Yes, they’re out to fleece you, everyone knows that, but online anyone can gamble. I can just imagine the scene in Bangkok or Pattaya when all the Patpong girls turn up with their * boyfriends* on their arms, or Pattaya when Soi 6 storm in !
i somehow believe that things are going from bad to worse here.

Casinos aren't legal in China, which is undoubtedly where the push for this has come from. This will be casinos built by Chinese, run by Chinese, and frequented almost exclusively by Chinese, with the profits going back to China. There will be a boom for local construction workers, and jobs for locals working in them, but the thousands of Chinese tourists will do nothing for the rest of the town's economy. Anyone who has ever been to Macao, which is China's main casino area (local laws apply), will know how utterly dead the place is, despite the 3 million tourists who go there each year.

Pattaya (where this will no doubt end up) will have a seafront of hotels/casinos, and Walking Street will become a street of shops and restaurants.

Actually Macau isn't that quiet. Excluding 2020 & 2021 because of covid Macau received 39.4 million tourists in 2019 which is only 400k less then what Thailand received in the same year. Plus it has a population of 680,000.

Also when you take into account the size of Macau in land area (32.9 km squared) its far from being quiet.

Yes, China's crackdown is going to hurt Macau and Singapore and Australia...and if Thailand is banking on the Chinese, they better have a backup strategy...

I hate playing on mostly Chinese tables. The "English only" rule is overlooked and collusion against the white-guy makes gambling zero fun...

The crackdown...is a good thing.

...and if you think that any of the countries on the list are the targets then you are even more "foolishly wrong".

They all have their own Casino's. They rarely travel to gamble.

A Thai Casino is squarely aimed at the Asian market, and everything will be geared to them...and they won't be able to keep the Thai's out...

If they let one of the great Casino Operators run it, it will be world class and put Thailand on the gamblers map...but they won't. They just have to look at Singapore...but they won't...

Aussies love to gamble and also love to travel just like the Singaporeans, Indonesian and Malaysians. It will be a casino tourism holiday. Singapore has restrictions for locals to enter the casinos. Indonesian and Malaysian Muslims are not allowed in their casinos. The Thai casinos will target Asian countries not necessarily China.
