So in other words, just another annual flu. I've got the BS variant with runny nose, better alert the media, I think this one spread quick.

For young populations, it seems mild. For older Farangs, we don't know how bad it will be.

seriously though if Omicron really is mild and a way out of the pandemic to endemic then surely once they know the death rate they should just open the planet and be done with it. Isolating the mildly

Sorry , but the best thing for the planet would be a high transmission rate and high mortality .

But not while on their plane? Or in the airport?

Everyone from the flight would have been tested on arrival.

But your are right to question the quarantine period. Scotland and Wales wanted extended quarantine in the UK but Boris in his wisdom said no.

Maybe Thailand should bring back 7 days quarantine for everyone.

Omicron Wave Sees South Africa’s Weekly Excess Deaths Almost Double

South African excess deaths, a measure of mortality above a historical average, almost doubled in the week ending Nov. 28 from the preceding seven-day period as a new coronavirus variant spread across the country.

During the period 2,076 more people died than would normally be expected, the South African Medical Research Council said in a report on Wednesday. That compares with 1,091 the week earlier…

I got vaccinated in March and a booster in September. It looks like sooner or later everyone will be exposed to omicron, so I'm halfway thinking I'd rather be exposed now, while I'm still well-vaxxed, rather than later. Seems like a crazy idea though.

If you are otherwise fit and healthy, it could be an option if you have never been infected. However, currently, the Delta variant is still rampant throughout Thailand and globally elsewhere, and that's a whole new risky ball game. Give it a month and wait for Omicron to take over the country - with only mild symptoms scientifically proven - as it will, despite what the health minister says.

What I want to know is why were two unvaccinated Thai women doing in Nigeria in the first place, and how did they re enter Thailand without being vaccinated?

OMG! 2 cases!!! It's a WAVE! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!! ????

Probably because the actuality is different to what we read about airport control and vaccination clinics.

And you can guess what Thai women were doing in Lagos or elswhere, as you can guess what Nigerian women are doing in Bangkok and elsewhere.

There is a lot to be learned about this variant and what effect it has on the infected.   Omicron has picked up a lot of mutations and my concern is how this happened and if it has something going on that makes it more susceptible to mutating, in which case it could be more problematic down the road.  But that's speculation.

Unless this variant has some big surprises, I suspect the world will generally move toward greater mobility and fewer restrictions.  Sometimes pandemics end when people tire of trying to deal with it.  The disease doesn't go away, but how people react to it does.   I think a level of pandemic-fatigue is well underway.

Omicron will have less propensity to mutate than Delta.. ( but it is still possible). The lesser propensity arises from the fact that it does  not provide a life and death struggle based on evidence we have seen so far ( stress the words " so far") comparative to Delta variant. An ideal case for mutation is say a immune compromised person who is fighting a long battle with Delta and this is a breeding ground for mutation.. astoundingly there are reports that some of the Omicron mutation include splices of common cold  virus as well.. perhaps accounting for its mild symptoms...if Omicron stays as a mild effect that the bodies immune system can handle then it will be an advantage to have it spread through the population base with special care to those who are sick, compromised immune systems and elderly ......

That sounds bad.

There is a big contradiction between hospitals filling up, and a mild virus.

There is a big contradiction between doctors saying patients in the hospital are with Covid, but not admitted due to Covid, the implication being that patients are getting infected after admission. So, why are hospitals filling up with patients admitted for something other than Covid?

Yeah, someone commented similarly in Wuhan in late 2019.

multiply that by at least 10 and you will come up with something nearer the correct figure of infections in the population . A recent paper from Pfizer determined the 2 doses of Pfizer does not fully protest against the Omicron variant and the antibodies are reduced to only 50% .  It is absolutely necessary to get the 3rd Pfizer booster shot to enable full protection .

As for other Covid vaccines I would expect they fare even somewhat worse than Pfizer or Moderna .   Lookout out Thailand ,Omicron is here and spreading fast .  Booster jabs are needed and should start now !

Regardless of its lethality, Omicron spreads like wildfire everywhere. It's possible that virtually everyone will catch it.

We know that it is mostly mild in young populations, but that is true for all variants of this virus. What happens when it hits an older population remains unreported.

Our fellow posters here who are vaccine hesitant better finish up their research and get the jab.

Even if it's mostly mild it also causes hospitalizations.

Some hospitals in south Africa has seen the submissions to hospitals double by each day this week.

It's that worrying?

It could be so i would also say it's best to take the vaccines even if a mild mutation is spreading.

Sure the chance are that people will not be hospitalized, but if it is really that transmittable, then we will see a huge amount of infected people within 6 months. Much much higher than we saw with the delta.

So a certain % of them would need a hospital, and we could reach a  point at some time, where infections will rise so fast, that hospitals are getting overburden.

Not because it is mild, but because so many more are infected compared to the delta, and that would also mean more at hospitals even if it's milder.

Someone better at English can probably better explain the statistics behind what i trying to say.

Lock the borders and make everyone stay in their homes!  It's the only way to remain 'safe.'

i've heard it starts off weak then kills you a few months later

There are very few vaccinated in Africa, there have been zero deaths and only mild symptoms.

What were the two Thai women doing in Nigeria? Forget Covid, I’d worry about a host of STD, drug business, first hand training on online scamming which can be more damaging not to mention they are damaged goods now anyways (once you go black……)????????????

Love to see the science involved in that.

I keep wondering/asking exactly what testing is done to isolate different variants. So far, I have not received an answer anywhere.

How many are in the pockets of Pfizer. A company that previously  got the largest fine for fraud in US history.

The entered via 10 day quarantine, which is an option for any unvaccinated traveller, Thai or foreign.

Their COVID positive status was discovered through testing in quarantine.

This is getting so boring. Can we talk about something else and stop all the hand wringing over Covid in general? Pretty soon we’ll be counting flu cases, common colds, sniffles and pink eye.

Says he who is three-quarters of a page into reading a thread clearly about the virus.

Actually, he might be right, let's just stick our heads in the sand, ignore a potentially deadly disease and carry on having fun.

We're not in having to live in the poorer parts of Africa, India, South America, S.E. Asia after all. Let them get on with it.
