Ride hailing on Phuket (Grab? BOLT?)

Featured Replies

Later this month I want to spend some days on Phuket.
(direct flight from Khon Kaen)
I have little experience with Phuket but local transport is a headache.
I found some hints on the web about ride hailing services.
But would like to hear first hand reports.

How do Grab and/or BOLT work on Phuket? Others?

I considered to rent a car for occasional tours on the island although I prefer a scooter for shorter distances.

Properly insured micro car is about 40 Euro/day (1500 baht).
How much is a scooter at these times (5 days)?

Renting a car pays for itself within the first hour after you arrive on Phuket.

I vow to never take any taxi/tuk-tuk/grab on Phuket again.

Car can be found at 1000-1300 a day for only 5 days period. Motorbikes depending on size from 150-6000 a day.. But if you mean a normal click or something.. 200-250 a day. Cheaper on monthly of course.

Bolt can be about 50% of what Grab charges in Phuket. The advantage of Grab is that there are more taxis and you can include your credit card in your profile so you pay the exact fare. With Bolt you pay cash (and taxis never have change).

Depending on where you're staying and how often you will be traveling around the island a car or motorbike could be cheaper.

But so you say in general it is working.

Hopefully much cheaper than the known rip-off carts.

That's the way to go.

Rent it from the airport and you've already avoided overpriced taxis and crowded airport vans.

Return back to the airport and you've avoided the overpriced hotel shuttle or taxi.

We rent an SUV anytime we go.

Go as you please, stock up on snacks from Makro.

You can then just rent a scooter daily for short rides if you want to feel the warm breeze on your balding head.

Enjoy your trip!

I used economy car rental.

https://www.economycarrentals.com/

They give all the rental agencies and then give you some options.  Of course 5 or 7 day rentals are cheaper.

I always decline the insurance because my American Express Platinum card covers any damages.

Of course check with your CC beforehand.

What’s the cheapest taxi on Phuket and how do you get Bolt please?

Bolt and Grab are both apps that you download from the App Store or Google Play and use on your smartphone. They are both pretty intuitive. Once you enter your location start and end points they will both give you a quote. You see the cost before you confirm/accept.

Another fairly new app is InDriver, which is also available in Phuket. With it, you set the fare that you believe is appropriate and drivers decide whether they will accept your offer. First look at Grab or Bolt to get an idea of the fare and then put in a lower amount into the inDriver app.

Renting a car is a great option, but some of us are not used to driving on the wrong side of the road.
