COVID-19: Thailand reports 2,575 new coronavirus cases, 17 deaths, 2,695 recoveries

Thailand on Wednesday (December 29) reported 2,575 new COVID-19 cases, 2,695 recoveries and 17 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 2,535. Prisons: 40

▶︎ Recoveries: 2,695

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,188,424

▶︎ Total recoveries since April 1: 2,134,712

 

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,217,287 with 21,647 deaths.

 

The news comes as Dr Somsak Akksilp, director-general of the Department of Medical Services (DMS), has confirmed that Thailand will move forward with procuring 2 million tablets of the Molnupiravir COVID-19 treatment drug. The move comes amid reports that France has cancelled its own order of the anti-COVID pill due to unsatisfactory test results.

 

Last week, France became the first country to publicly cancel its Molnupiravir procurement with Merck, citing disappointing trial data. It instead made an order for a similar drug being produced by Pfizer.

Still waiting for the dashboard to update with the ATK's. I read an article that with Omicron the ATK tests not performing so well:

I get it, the less you test, the lower the numbers, right, everything is under control as Mr Anutin and his soon to be retired General who will make way for his also power hungry friend would say, under duress that is.

 

The writing is on the wall, or is that, in the vaccines.

recent news out of SA is very positive, I suggest people take a look

 

meanwhile as infections soar in the UK hospitalizations due to omicron are unclear as they lack critical data such as variant and the reason why people were admitted, it is being suggested just like in SA a high percentage of hospital detections were discovered through routine testing and these people were not primary covid omicron cases but incidental - mainstream media appear to be miss reporting these critical details or leaving them out - you have to wonder why

This week will be a severity indicator of Omicron outbreaks: lecturer

 

The last week before New Year is going to be a severity indicator of Covid-19 Omicron outbreaks in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Medicine lecturer Thira Woratanarat wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

 

With the biggest holiday season of the year arriving, Thira urged people to celebrate the New Year with extra precautions in a bid to keep the pandemic from spreading yet again.

 

He said two face masks – a medical face mask and a cloth one – should be worn at all times while each person needs to strictly follow the social distancing rule of at least a metre.

What makes South Africa data more reliable than the data coming out of the UK? I agree it looks positive there and hope that will be replicated here but its not yet a slam dunk. 

 

UK hospital data is broken down into variants and published on a daily basis. On the 27th it was 407 and the latest on the 28th is now up to 668 hospitalizations for Omicron with 49 deaths, you will find details in the reports. These however are only the admissions that were actually sequenced, not everyone is sequenced.

 

For general covid admissions which include delta and Omicron plus incidental admissions then the best source for that recently is the COE of NHS Providers Chris Hopson, read his twitter thread here but I suggest you go to link as the thread is quite long

 

These are a few snippets

 

London data, in particular, is important as it’s been the clear epicentre of omicron up to now. Number of covid-19 patients in London hospitals has grown by 45% from 20 Dec to 27 Dec. There's currently a 14 day doubling time (1,360 on Dec 13 to 2,640 on Dec 27)

 

Talking to trust chief executives this morning, what’s very interesting is how many are talking about number of asymptomatic patients being admitted to hospital for other reasons and then testing positive for covid. Some are describing this as ‘incidental covid’

 

Trusts not, at moment, reporting large numbers of patients with severe Covid type respiratory problems needing critical care. Also not needing to massively increase use of oxygen. Both of which we saw in last Jan’s delta variant peak + very difficult critical care surge

Yes fantastic how the vaccines have now finally driven down the covid deaths where before they were higher, unfortunately no vaccine for stupidity on the roads.

If the same importance was applied to the road accident problem by enforcement of the highway code, with patrols on the sois and highways, we would have something to applaud the government and the police for. Raiding bars and massage parlours is the the soft and easy approach and achieves nothing. Except for a few back handers.

Brother-in-law in South Africa, who is 76 and diabetic, caught COVID and recovered after a few days of fever, runny nose, cough and sore throat.  He has had 2x Pfizer, the second shot nearly 6 months ago.  They bother to do the sequencing for most cases there but assumed it was omicron.
