Chinese high speed trains bring destruction for Thai farmers

The opening of the Kunming-Vientiane high speed rail network could bring opportunity to Thailand’s North East but government negotiators must be wary of pitfalls and problems should they expose the region to China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

 

Thailand should be especially vigilant of China’s non-tariff barriers that could impair Thailand’s ability to export through the rail line.

 

Opportunity abound but caution necessary

 

Pavida Pananond, an Associate Professor of International Business at Thammasat University, said that the recently opened Kunming-Vientiane railway could provide many development opportunities for Thailand’s northeast and become a gateway for the country to join this regional rail network.

Common...its all sinophobia...CCP is nice to everyone....ask HK, Taiwan,Phillipines, India, Vietnam, Srilanka and many other devil countries which keep grudge with CCP. CCP just want to trade and grab territory...nothing wrong with that if you are strong and others are fool.

They create that reliance by opening up their markets and then having that power over you - they can play on the fact that you can't switch sales of Durian to other countries quick enough to avoid it spoiling. The world needs to get really tough with Xi's China.

Yes but since Thai may not able to relate it to them, I gave them examples closer to them but as you and I know that Thai politicians arent known to have a spine and lack strategic vision. Phillipine just bought Brahmos missile from India to deter CCP from their nefarious intention in South China sea and what Thailand is doing is purchasing submarines from China??

Any "deal" involving China and another country will and can only result in catastrophe for the other nation. Once you let the Chinese in, it's over.

Unfortunately China has rearmed to the point that through military action it can sink the world economy. HS train is only a small part of its hegemonist policy.

Prices drop, minor really, compared to the impact the horde will have.  Those coming on planes were bad enough, the numbers on trains will dwarf that.  Once their masters allow them to travel of course.

Import taxes are very high here making even the most meager imported goods out of the reach of the common consumers.

Can you disclose what did you import and how much import tax did you pay?

If it was from Asian country there are special forms that allow you import with zero tax or almost zero.. 

Even if from non-Asian country, there are commodities with also very low tax, e.g. , some raw material.  

BTW, do you know an import-tax-free country?

Do you mean the ACFTA (ASEAN-China Free Trade Area)? How does it counter the China threat?

Chinese tomatoes at 20 baht a kilo - bring them in! Last time I was in Makro Samui the tomatoes were between 70 and 140 bahts a kilo.  The Chinese tomatoes are probably as crappy as the Thai tomatoes, but at least are way cheaper.
