Thai FDA speeds up Cannabis Act enactment, cannabis “sandboxes” proposed for recreational use

National – The Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accelerated the implementation of the Cannabis Act which allows planting and growing cannabis plants at home for medical treatment purposes. Additionally, Thai authorities are reportedly considering including a cannabis ‘recreational’ sandbox.

 

For reference, a sandbox is a term used in Thailand currently primarily for tourism and relates to activities (currently mostly tourism-related) that would only be allowed in certain provinces, districts, or locations.

 

FDA Secretary-General Dr. Paisan Dankhum revealed today, January 24th, that there are 10 sections, 52 articles in the draft. The crucial reason for the acceleration was that the FDA now recognized cannabis and hemp as medicinal plants and economic crops, but they are not, technically, legal in terms of the justice system which has led to disputes between growers, law enforcement, and health officials. The administration wanted to use the best parts of the plants in both traditional and modern medical fields by extracting portions of them to produce various products such as medicine, cosmetics, food, clothing, etc.

 

“However, some restrictions on marijuana misuse must still be put into effect. For example, marijuana must be prohibited for people under 20 years of age, pregnant or lactating women. Selling for recreation is still considered illegal, however, consideration is being given for areas designated by the Cannabis Committee or “Sandbox areas”. More information will be revealed later as a ministerial regulation,” the Secretary-General said.

That’s a step in the right direction if they implement certain areas for smokers and not just cultivating low THC tat. I’m neither a smoker nor a pothead but having a choice would be cool.

Maybe but any user that can be persuaded from the violence inciting drug alcohol with far harsher effects on the body to pot is great. Though not so great for their diet ???? But then again i rather see a pot user assault a mars bar then a violent drunk assault his wife.

From the sublime to the ridiculous.. this is how the Thai government operate, it's either no bars, no drinks no fun, PCR tests every 5 min. sandboxes and quarantine to free for all, willy nilly, grow your own grass and pot.. expect pot heads to come in from all over the world in their droves...

So funny all the lovers of the drug alcohol that does far more damage to the body (i can back it up with science not tall tales) complaining about pot being decriminalized. Shows the narrow mindset of some people. Not realizing that their drug of choice (alcohol causes far more health problems not to mention violence) then pot. Especially if pot is eaten (no damage to the lungs) or vaped also less damage.

 

Then again years of acceptance of alcohol have made it socially acceptable and users don't want to accept the down sides.

 

Now I won't be touching pot as it screws up my diet (know from experience) but if i had to choose from the two drugs then it would be most definitely be pot as its far milder on the body and can actually help with some problems. Now if someone is a heavy pot user it would be bad but not as bad as people who use alcohol a lot. 

 

Its hilarious to see the double standard of the alcohol crowd on this forum.

Is it really the best argument to go off topic and point out other problems. Are you advocating the return of prohibition?

I welcome Cannabis being more readily available for medical benefits, at my age that is more likely what I will be in need of.

I don't see a problem, besides the fact that after that they can't fine people for having THC in their blood. They can only fine people / jail people for having cannabis on them as people could have used it days before in a sandbox and still have it in their blood.

I am pointing out that if you have to outlaw a drug based on how bad it is then alcohol would be far better choice. 

 

Im pointing out that all those alcohol users are hypocrites as their drug does so much more damage to bodies and other people then pot so it hypocritical to get so angry about this.

 

Im not sure but have you even considered that alcohol not pot is mostly there when there is voilence and the deaths you see from alcohol are plentiful (liver damage and the likes) while pot has never killed anyone from an overdose.

 

So just pointing out that anyone switching from alcohol to pot is a win health wise and violence wise. So i don't see the problem with legalizing a far less problematic drug that could actually help people.

 

A lot of older people on this forum have no knowledge of drugs, if you took the time to educate yourself about the dangers of alcohol vs pot then you would see that alcohol is far more of problem then pot ever is / will be.

 

So why all the hatred of pot ? Why can't the alcohol users accept that an other drug is being decriminalized? Problably because they have never looked into the dangers of alcohol vs those of pot.

 

If i had to ban one of the two based on dangers and problems any scientist based on the facts would ban alcohol. So tell me why are the older alcoholic users so against pot.

I think it is a bit chicken and egg.... there are so many alcohol related problems, purely because it is so readily available, even commonplace and forced upon people. Addiction is not addressed. The part alcohol played in life for me, so many years ago in the UK, and then I took that 'culture' with me elsewhere, well it was major. 

My point is not to carp on  about alcohol here, treat that as a separate issue and problem, but to cite it as a way  and argument to make other mind affecting drugs available, is not a valid argument. 

Fortunately I am all grown up now, and am not tempted to pop any pill someone say isn't as bad as alcohol, and I never want to get back into the stupidity of smoking anything again. But, if this stuff has medicinal benefits, and can bring relief to clinical problems, I want it.

FDA Secretary-General Dr. Paisan Dankhum said the FDA's bill would allow people to grow cannabis for their own consumption on the condition that they must report the cultivation to their respective provincial administrative organisations. Household consumption would be for medical purposes only.

 

Those who wish to be involved in commercial cultivation, import, export, sales and advertisements of cannabis will need FDA's approval.

 

The bill set a jail term of three years and/or a fine of 30,000 baht for wrongdoers.

That putting your head in the sand, i would then advocate for total prohibition just to show people it does not work.  So no prohibition for alcohol but for other drugs it shows bias. I believe people should be free to use a far less damaging drug.  Maybe people should trust science and forget their bias. Either ban all drugs alcohol included or release a few more.

Someone's idiot nephew thought it would be cool to mention a sandbox. Usually littered with dog and cat feces. (Yes, we all know about software/app sandboxes.)

 

You can't have the law of the land suspended based on geographic location? (Unless you grant yourselves emergency powers of course.)

Why choose between the 2? They actually compliment each other quite well (in moderation of course).

 

This is great news if it happens, I'll definitely have a small allotment on the farm for some.

Here in Thailand the alcohol problem is probably whiskey and lao khao induced for the Thais anyway, not so many problems with just beer. I'm sure you don't mean to throw all those who have a beer, a glass of wine or a few drinks into the same alcoholic abuser category but you do. Much the same as those who consider a pot smoker as a "druggie" which is an old person's term.

 

A little pot compliments a beer buzz and the only victims are M&M's.

Yeah, I got cannabis mad friends who do that too.... they used to drink, but now use weed, even grow it. I think they are motivated by how it is far cheaper than the beer they used to drink so much of. So yes, legalize it, and get some real taxes coming in from it.

you keep trying to push your alcoholic nonsense when it's perfectly legal ....  whereas drugs are not and society in general frowns upon pushers, addicts and users & rightly so.  The story is about a drug,  nothing to do with alcohol.
