Thailand Road Carnage: Gran on motorcycle dead but 5 year old grandson survives with cuts

Khu Bang Luang police attended an accident in which a pick-up collided with a motorcycle with sidecar attachment on the Pathum Thani to Lat Lum Kaew Road in Pathum Thani north of Bangkok at 7.30 last night.

 

It happened at a U-turn between a Vigo and a Yamaha.

 

Bits of the bike were scattered everywhere and it was under the front wheels of the pick-up while 50 meters away was the lifeless body of Pranee Phothong, 54.

 

A five year old boy with minor road rash injuries was being cared for by relatives as Thai Rath reporters arrived. 

 

Rakchart Ayamuang, 26, from Buriram was driving the pick-up taking workers back to their home.

 

He said that another vehicle hit the bike propelling it into his path. He was unable to brake in time. 

 

The boy is now back home.

 

Investigations continue.

Just another day on the most dangerous roads in the world, and they still don´t understand to enforce the law and create real driving education before granting licenses. After that, we have the mindset of the ordinary person, to build a life where nothing is important enough to care for.

To my knowledge motorcycle with sidecar (มอเตอร์ไซค์แบบพ่วงข้าง )are NOT legal at all to drive..but please tell me if i'm wrong.RIP the old lady.

M/C had no registration plate, and zooming in on Photo no lights on the side car as usual, from what I see daily I doubt even the bike had rear lights working.

If a sidecar is added to a motorcycle the law requires that it is inspected at a DLT facility and, if acceptable, is re-registered as a combination and subject to a higher rate of annual road tax. Needless to say this rarely happens. It is also illegal to carry passengers in the sidecar......????

Whether something is illegal or not has absolutely no relevance in Thailand. No-one has any respect for the law, including the police who fail to enforce it.

That's the lottery numbers taken care of, but more seriously it feels like the govt/hiso's don't want things to change, it helps them cull the herd

Most of the people in East-Asian countries only can afford a Motorcycle or a motorcycle with side-car. In India, Cambodia, Philipinnes, Indonesia, etc. Motorcycles and motorcycles with side-car are the dominant means of transport.
What makes Thailand stand on top of these countries by number of deaths in traffic accidents are:
- the unwilling attitude to learn and adhere to the basic traffic rules

- the beliefs that making any vehicle a danger on the road by removing lights or any other security device
- the design of Thai roads where it is possible to an U-Turn in the middle of a highway where traffic runs at 120km/hr 
And not to forget, the attitude of the GFN (Good-For_Nothing) police corps.

Guy driving pickup probably looking at his phone, I see this too many times these days. 

 

Grandma's and children should be off these dangerous roads after dark, bloody stupid out riding in the dark
