Thai opposition Move Forward party’s draft bill on same-sex marriage was dealt a blow today (Wednesday) when the House of Representatives voted to send it for vetting by the cabinet before its first reading in the House.

On the same day, the progress of the opposition party’s liquor bill, intended to open up Thailand’s liquor industry to more competition, was also delayed by the House when it voted to send the bill to the cabinet for consideration in 60 days, an apparent new stalling tactic that has sent a the Thai-language hashtag “marriage equality” trending on Twitter as netizens voiced their disappointment and outrage.

PM Office Minister Anucha Nakasai told the House that he was assigned by the cabinet to accept the marriage equality bill for consideration by the cabinet before its first reading.

In every other nation dinosaurs became extinct, unless they evolved into something new & useful.

I often wonder how Thailand bucked this trend?

Indeed, but by delaying the bill it will only cost a lot of money.. There are already a lot of samesex couples waiting to get married or bet a legal status. Can you imagine how much money will be pumped in the economy?? Wedding dresses, food, festive lights, and so on... But delaying will only bring damage

Since same sex marriage was legalized in the US, an estimated $3.8 billion dollars has been spent on gay marriages there.  Thailand would, of course, be much less but to say 'hardly any money pumped into the economy', I think is incorrect.

You don't understand apparently....

It’s called DINK. Double income no family. They will spend a lot on their weddings and their accommodations. Don’t think people understand how many high end properties are owned by same sex couples. Would be nice if they were treated as all others. It doesn’t harm anyone but themselves if things go south.

With all due respect to the Moving Forward folks, I would have to think that they could use their time and effort to address the missed larger picture - for the commons, instead of particular pet projects.

Don't believe that Thailand's current political scene can afford to be mucking around with such isolated and esoteric issues. We can get back to these things after the revolution is won.

You might be surprised that just because you don’t find equality important, plenty of other people do.

Equality for all is a pet project?

Who knew…

”It's human rights for everybody
There is no difference
Live on! And be yourself!
When I was in church, they taught me something else
If you preach hate at the service Those words aren't anointed
And that Holy Water, that you soak in is then poisoned
When everyone else Is more comfortable remaining voiceless
Rather than fighting for humans, that have had their rights stolen
I might not be the same But that's not important
No freedom 'til we're equal
Damn right I support it”

I asked my cousin why she had never married her partner she said " why" .

That’s your cousin, her choice but she doesn’t speak for everyone, and is certainly no reason to deny the rights of other people.

Perhaps a compromise: Allow same sex marriage but not between the hours of 2 and 5 PM ?

it's about human rights, not about how much commerce can be done on tourists and locals.

Surely foreign-thai couples are disadvantaged as come to immigration law. Makes difficult for a foreign partner to stay in thailand. A very large foreigners in thailand are on marriage visas, because it's easier and cheaper in comparison to the other visa options.

So even if mixed gay couple is legally married elsewhere in the world, they are not recognised in thailand. Can't legalise their marriage or partnership.

That's a legal problem for tens, possible hundreds of thousands mixed couples.

There are also millions of thai couples which are also treated unequal. Without legal marriage they can't adopt kids. It also complicates family matters if there are already kids from earlier relationships.

In thailand kids from single parents are not entitled to free state education.

In the world married get tax brakes, including for rising children.

Also inheritance law can't be be used.
