Thai media reported yet more bad news for the image of the saffron clad Buddhist monks of Thailand.

Police, religious authorities and concerned locals searched the quarters of the former abbot of Wat Khokko in Lamphu sub-district of Naratiwas in the far south of Thailand.

"Phra Than Saeng" had recently voluntarily defrocked himself.

He was found in possession of four guns - a .38, a .22, a 9mm and a five shot shotgun.

In addition a large quantity of cash and bank accounts showed that he had 1.7 million baht.

Naew Na reported the story along with pictures of people counting a large amount of coins and various baht bills.

The locals said that the former abbot was a quiet man who didn't mix well.

He had done nothing to develop the temple and had just argued with the locals over money.

The story comes on the same day that Thai media was reporting a sensational story of a monk caught with a woman in Phrapradaeng, translated elsewhere on ASEAN NOW.

I'm never quite sure who is the worst, the Saffron brigade or the police.

Both organisations are full of crooks.

The monk hood in Thailand seems to numerous crooks located in the temples nationwide  . Often large sums of cash amounting to millions and land deeds are often provided as evidence against the abbots and monks accused of wrongdoing .

Everyday you can see poor Thai people making merit by making cash and food  donations to some monks who are using  saffron robes as cover for nonreligious and sometimes profitable schemes at the expense of the poor .

Must follow the middle path obviously didn't resonate with him.

All you have to remember is that monks, police and army - almost exclusively male dominated in Thailand - do not require formal education. Remove all men from Thai society tomorrow and the country wouldn't miss a beat. It's the women who do all the work and raise the kids. I spent 5 years teaching in s e Asia and China and 80% of my students were female in both schools and universities. Statement from Thai female student in ROI Et, 'I don't need to study because I am beautiful!' Reply, 'your beauty will last another 10 years but an education will last a lifetime'. And these people wonder why they are at the bottom of the food chain.

The Saffron Mafia has the respect of the buffalo population, still......

The temple looks a right state would have thought he would have bought a leaf blower and had a tidy up before defrocking himself ????
