Popular Post webfact
Picture: INN A whole bunch of monks in Pathum Thani have been busted after they set up a mini shanty town. It was their own private booze den where they'd get wasted instead of going back to the temple, reported INN. The parishioners in the area were not amused with the irregular behaviour. Behaviour that seems to be becoming the norm recently with a host of negative stories about Thailand's clergy. Picture: INN After social media posts featuring 7 boozy monks and a car being used for the alms round, Klong Luang district chief Nitichai Wiriyanon sent in his minions and religious officials to an area off the Bang Khan - Nong Seua Road. There were four monks there getting merrily drunk when they should have been doing their holy rounds. Large numbers of spirits (the liquid kind) and beer bottles were scattered about. Picture: INN Phra Sorayuth admitted the booze den had been going on for ages and, yes, he did partake of earthly liquor. Phra Manoon admitted it was him in the car on social media though he did say he sometimes took a taxi for his "bintabaht" (alms round). The abbot Phra Kru Monkholkitrajak ordered action and four were taken for a swift defrocking. Three others were sent back to another temple. Picture: INN Other stories in the Thai press recently included a monk doing a runner from paying a restaurant and booze tab in Sattahip and another one pulling a gun and firing on the faithful in a dispute over land. A large number of rifles were found in his holy quarters. Yet another was with a scantily clad woman, with a bra found discarded by the stairs and a case of wine cooler "used for religious purposes". Popular Post grain
Been my opinion for many years now that a great many Thai monks are low life bottom feeding scumbag Thai men who have nothing going for them...no education, no skills, no job...and they go to a temple put on an orange robe and Hey Presto! an instant holy man who gets free housing, free food, free gifts, and perhaps most of all gets revered and have people groveling at their feet. 9

khaowong1
I'm pretty surprised about this. But not too. I've actually spent my time as a monk at 4 temples. Three of them, the abbot knew where we were pretty much all the time. I stayed at a 4th temple on the West bank of the Chao Pryha river in Bangkok and the abbot there didn't seem to know anything about anyone. But in the smaller temples outside the larger cities, the abbots keep in touch with their monks. Every temple has their problem monks. But to have 3 or 4 monks, off the temple grounds, hanging in some hut getting drunk, sounds like to me a abbot problem also. 1
ThailandRyan
Dirty unkempt Monks who litter like most Thai's, no wonder they need parishioners to clean up the Wat as they are too lazy to pick up after themselves and are drunk most of the day. So much for the donations being used for good they are used to buy booze. Why not just put a Kegerator in the Wat and make it look like a giant M-150 can..... I presume the three who were 'sent back to another temple' can only be defrocked by their own abbot. (if he so chooses to)
