Hello everyone

I have been lurking on this forum for years and have enjoyed reading most everyones comments.

I have lived in the Pattaya/Jomtiem area for 3 years. I am fed up with the crime and all the not-so-nice things happening in Pattaya and just found a house in Udon. :o

I now have realized that I cannot fit all my stuff into the back of a pick-up.

Does anyone know of a truck rental company that rents those 6 wheeled Isuzus or hired driver with a large truck that could help me move from Pattaya to Udon?

I don't have much but the motorcycle, freezer and washer takes up most of the bed of a normal sized pick-up.

Also, is it cheaper to hire the truck and driver from Udon or from Pattaya? Either way he ends up driving one way empty.

I know 3 years ago it cost 5,000 baht for a hired truck and driver from Pattaya to Udon. I lost the contact number for him and I don't know how the GF found him in the first place.

I sure it is a little higher because of gas prices. If I wasn't so old I'd do the move myself :D

Thanks kindly for any help/suggestions

Try a normal transport company. I had close to 2 cubic metres moved across the country for 500 Baht (!!!). I delivered my stuff packed to the firm and they sent it to my doorstep. They told me it will take a week (because they only go if a truck is full), but in reality my things came on the second day.

Thanks sutnyod for that information.

I really want to stay close to my personal property so I have decided just to rent a pick-up and do it myself. I need the exercise anyway. Two trips should do the trick.

Should make the first trip around the 22nd of this month.

I will be soooooooo happy to leave Pattaya.

Best Regards ...

Okay, in that case I would think hiring in Udorn would be cheaper. Unfortunately I cannot help you with that. Maybe the network of taxi drivers in Bkk can help. They are all Isaan guys (well, almost), and very helpful. They sure know somebody with a pick-up in Udorn. But then, you are in Pattaya, right? :o Do you have Isaan taxi drivers there?

Thanks for the good ideas Sutnyod. Yes I am in Pattaya now. I hired a normal pick-up for a week (6,000 baht) and now I can take my time moving. Should be able to move everything with two trips and then fly back to Udon from Bangkok.

Again thanks for your input.

I will need to buy an oven since I enjoy baking. Any second hand stores in Udon that have ovens?

Just asking is all.

I can't wait to get established in Udon. Most of my friends say I won't last 3 months before I head back to Pattaya.

We will see.

Best regards ......

Drive along Sukhumvit and you will see several medium and large sized trucks with "for rent" signs (in Thai, so bring a local if you can't read that). The usualy price is about 500 baht for a couple of hours locally so I'd think they'd probably charge you maybe 1000 baht/day + fuel + food + etc to move your stuff up to the sticks.

Seems to me farangs are much more targeted upcountry though, not sure how smart your idea is, but good luck to you.

Why don't you ask the person you rent the truck from to make the second trip to Udon with you.

You can return the truck to them after 1 1/2 trips and save yourself the 2nd return trip and the airfare to Udon.

TerryLH,

Good idea. I wish I had thought of that before I hired a truck for a week.

I shall use your idea if Udon doesn't work out.

Thanks again...

Well I have lived in Udon for nearly five yeares, don't know anyone one who moved back to Pattaya, but suppose anythign is posible. No you won't be a target in Udon. There are lots of farrangas here a large number who came from the Pattaya area. We don't have the nightlife, there is some but nothing like Pattaya. But it's short trip and a vacation to go where your leaving. You can find trouble here I suppose if you really go looking for it. Stoves with oven are availble but new, don't see many used ones for sale around.

From what I hear Pattaya immigration is much easier to deal with then Nong Khia so be ready for it and do the reseach. I'll PM you local site with a wealth of information about the area. It will aslo get you connected with the locals.

If you ride bikes there are several groups you can ride with here.

There are guys who golf together a good source for that is Harry's bar

If you don't speak Thai a good thing to know here when yuo get out of Udon AUA has some good courses.

I was going to suggest yuo mail your thing but it seems you answered that problem. I recently mailed a 750CC Yamaha to Bangkok form here about a 1K baht and no problem at all.

Udon is what you make it, a little effort and you can be busy most times or you can stay home and watch the grass grow. Personally I just do as the mood suits me for the day.

Thanks Ray,

Learning the lanauage is one of the few goals I have set for myself. Having retired nearly 7 years ago and moving to Pattaya, I sometimes feel like I am still burning the candle at both

ends.

The move to Udon will provide a relaxed and non stress enviroment. I actually want to watch the grass grow a few days a week. I think it does the body good.

Immigration here in Pattaya is a breeze with the retirement visa. I have never had a problem here or in Bangkok. I read there is an immigration office open (part-time) in one of Udon's hospitals. Not sure if that is true or not. I may just avoid Nong Khia altogether and pop up to Chiang Mai or Bangkok.

As far as the stove is concerned, I am sure there are some bakeries around where I can satisfy my sweet cravings.

Thanks again Ray..

Best regards,

just another guy, I recently hired a vehicle on a hire/drive basis and as I only wanted the vehicle to go to Had Lek the Company provided a Thai driver to bring the vehicle back to their base at Korat.

The driver cost me an extra 300baht.

Easily the most foolish comment I've read on this forum. I'm sure you've never been here or you wouldn't make such a statement.
