Not sure about that.......

It would not be surprise for costs to go beyond the limits and boundaries of many of the insurance policies offered in Thailand, and having the money does not stop it being expensive. Had a broker claiming Thailand's private hospitals are becoming as expensive as many other countries now, even mentioned USA and Switzerland. I think as far as Pattaya is concerned it is one particular hospital, and people can save money by going to places out of town, given the choice.

But that doesn't mean there isn't a decent hospital in Pattaya as the other poster was moaning about. I've found the level of health care good. Cant say my health insurance has ever complained over a bill, for any larger procedures you need to clear it prior anyway. If Thailand was expensive for medical care, why would people fly here for treatment?

People typically moan about the things that may not be accessible to them for one reason or the other, rubbish them to justify to themselves at least why they are going somewhere else. Private hospitals and International Schools are 2 prime examples.

If people are satisfied with the service they are getting elsewhere, then good luck to them. Doesn't mean the more expensive options are not up to scratch, that's just silly speak.

Define decent? Is the treatment fair value. Is it possible they deliberately pad bills or use price gouging. Why are meds so expensive there when I can get them 1/3rd the price outside. Why is simple paracetamol issued under some disguised name at a high cost? I have heard quite a few complaints over the years. A few of those likely owe their lives to the place though.

I'm not the one with difficulties !!!! ????

No you weren't, unless you can show me where I mentioned insurance.

It was nothing more than an arrogant attempt to promote private hospital elitism. Time you recognised your difficulty.

Just to clarify on the insurance, I have had private medical insurance (expat) for many years, and if this old injury requires inpatient surgery, then my insurance should cover it, because the insurance cover existed before the injury.  In any case, thanks all for the useful advice.

That is deliberate distortion.  You are obviously referring to my post and that is not the words I used.

I do not live in Pattaya, I have lived in Chonburi for nearly 15 years and well aware of the hospitals in the area, particularly government, I am registered with 5 of them.

My comment comes from the experience of others, mainly Thai, even the large government hospital here in Chonburi is not held in high regard. My wife and some of her family use a hospital in Bangkok, but the bulk of the neighbours use Bang Saen.

Some years ago I was treated at Pattaya Memorial for broken ribs, never again. Despite having insurance they would not return my passport till I paid them in cash.

PS  Apologies, I am not registered with 5 hospitals in the local area, it is 4 locally and Ban Phao, other side of Bangkok, where I had the cataract surgery done, as many others from this area, met my wife's old school friend from Sattahip in the waiting room.

You pay cash to settle the bill then you claim it back on insurance.

Have heard of this happening every now and then.

I don't know about Pattaya, but I recommend the Ramkhamhaeng Hospital group when it comes to excellent Doctors at the lower pricing. Are they in Pattaya? I don't know and, yes, they have bad Doctor's too (as all hospitals do). If you've decided to seek medical investigation and possible intervention, you'll have to try more than one Doctor. That's my recommendation. (Oh, and the prices at Ramkhamhaeng vs someone like Bumrungrad, unbelievable cheaper).

Moved to Health Forum so that I can keep an eye on the topic.

OP if a scan is needed, it would be of shoulder, not upper arm - or possibly oif the cervical spibne as your issue is likley from either shoulder or cervocal spine, shoulder more likley

Cost would depend on where the scan is done and whether or not contrast media is used

The Bang Na branch of this place would be the closets inexpensive option for a scan but I cannot advise doing a scan with contrast outside of a hospital  as there are risks https://www.mrithailand.com/en/contact-us-2/

Prices are on the wesbite

It is not certain you need an MRI and you risk wasting money by getting it first without advice of a doctor. Note that rotator cuff injuries can sometimes be diagnosed with just ultrasound. You really should invest in a trip to Bangkok to see this top shoulder specialist. If he advises a scan without contrast can then pop up to the above place (branch near Chatuchak) for it.

https://www.bumrungrad.com/en/doctors/Mason-Porramatikul

If he advises a scan with contrast I would recommend doing that at the hospital as a small number of people suffer serious reactions to the contrast media.

And if he thinks the problem is in the cervical spine, not shoulder, post that here and I will recommend further.

Problem with these hospitals is bill padding or unnecessary tests and treatments, only a week ago a friend had an inappropriate X-ray for tennis elbow, they just seized the opportunity to get the max out of a patient, you know taking advantage of the sick

Yes and that is another matter.... one is pushed through the process which includes paying for the meds and the rest of the bill, and many never get the opportunity to source them elsewhere.

I always tell the Dr just to write the meds on the certificate, and I will get them outside, they usually understand.

On the odd occasion they dont, just I just refuse them at the point of payment.

The real problem is people  talking about "these" hospitals.

There are government hospitals and private hospitals and posters should be quite clear with which they are referring to. The whole issue of medical treatment has been distorted by misleading posts, in particular by those that have never been to a government hospital. They make the assumption that every hospital is out to rip off every foreigner they come across.

After nearly 15 years of attending government hospitals and local clinics I know for a fact that is not the case.

A friend of mine always used Pattaya Bangkok hospital because he could "afford" it, he ran into problems and had to have his foot amputated. The wound never healed and after a few years and becoming bankrupt he ended up at the government hospital in Nakhon Nowhere, where they actually cured the problem. Unfortunately it was too late, he lost the will to live and died not long after.

A bit delusional to think private means better.

Most people realise private hospitals are best at bill padding although i went to Pattaya City Hospital a couple years ago, a govt hospital and i reckon they over charged me, certainly were not transparent about charges

Just out of interest what would an MRI tell you that a normal X-ray wouldnt? I am sure you have a good reason for wanting an MRI but I am just curious to know they reason.

As I said above, my x-ray exposed a possible tumor, it was seen as a shadow on my x-ray.

My doctor asked for me to have a MRI, with the injection of Contrast it clearly identifies any highlighted issues.

Quite, I have heard the same about Pattaya City and not just from foreigners, one of the reasons I made this comment in my first post "There is not a decent government hospital in Pattaya"

The other government hospital is Bang Lumung up at Naklua and that is not particularly well equipped. A few years back a friend's father in law had a fall and was taken to Bang Lamung, they couldn't deal with a head injury and sent him to Chonburi and by the time he got there it was too late.

Thanks, it went well, just a shadow, nothing found.

I reckon they just wanted more revenue, bigger invoice to charge my employer.

In Australia these specialists charge a fortune.

Glad I wasn't paying the bill.
