Engine troubles bring sink-or-swim moment for Thailand’s sub deal with China

This month brings a make-or-break meeting for the Thai Navy’s deal to buy a Chinese-made submarine, with delivery threatened by the fading chance of China getting German top-end engines as stipulated in the contract.

 

Next year’s delivery deadline for Thailand’s first submarine since World War II is now out of the question. The German government refuses to supply MTU396 diesel engines from Germany’s Motor and Turbine Union company, as specified in the Bt13.5-billion purchase deal signed in 2017 between the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and China’s state-owned China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co (CSOC) for the Yuan-class S26T submarine.

 

Bid to save deal

Both sides will hold talks later this month in a bid to settle the submarine engine issue, with RTN chief Admiral Somprasong Nilsamai insisting CSOC has to comply with the contract by fitting the submarine with the German propulsion system.

The Thai Navy has turned down CSOC’s offer to use Chinese-made engines that are certified by Germany’s MTU or to transfer two of China’s decommissioned submarines to Thailand.

Looks like the money can be removed from the table and the losses if any can be chalked up to doing business without a guarantee.  I mean they could buy a couple of hamster cages with the wheels inside and use the hamsters as the power turbine or even put a few exercise bikes inside with a chain reaching out to the screws.....

That's going to be hard since the Germans will not supply the engines to the Chinese. ????

Great news. The Generals can now pocket 100% of the money (instead of the usual 40%) and blame the whole terrible ‘misunderstanding’ on those unfriendly, uncooperative Germans.

If the subs ever do arrive in Thailand I hope the Navy check that the Chinese haven't just put MTU stickers on a Lifan engine.

You mean just like they did in WW1, when they declared the Germans "unfriendly" in order to impound the northern railway line the Germans had built for them when they were still "friendly" (and which after the war was finished by the "always friendly" Danes)? Then, still later on and in an ironic twist, the "friendly-again" Germans happily supplied the locomotives and rolling stock, of course.

But the Australian politicians weren't going to acquire fabulous personal wealth from the deal so they were happy to walk away. Plus they got to irriate the hell out of Macron, and who could resist that?

 

No way Thai politicians (or should I say Generals) are going to walk away from this deal. They wouldn't care if the subs have engines from a 30 year old Honda wave as long as they collect the coin that such a deal generates for them and their cronies. It's not like they're going to use the subs anyway, the water is too shallow.

 

I predict a solution will be found with the CCP and the Thai Generals will acquire yet more incredible, generational wealth from this deal.

Oh for goodness' sake! Just install a large rubber band in place of a complicated German engine and be done with it. At least the glorious Thai Navy will know how to operate it.

Does this mean the Thai government knows something about Chinese build quality?

Looking a few years ahead,will they trust Chinese made rockets to fly to the moon?

I think Thailand would be better off having a better missile system but not Chinese one that works.

the money would be better spent improving the infractructure and the lives of the Thai people.
