Thailand reports 24,252 new COVID-19 cases, 94 deaths, 26,225 recoveries

Thailand on Wednesday (April 6) reported 24,252 new COVID-19 cases, 26,225 recoveries and 94 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,781,827 with 25,697 deaths.

 

The news comes as the Department of Medical Sciences (DMSC) has said a parcel delivery man is suspected of being infected with a new COVID-19 variant not previously seen in Thailand.

According to DMSC Director-General Dr Supakit Sirilak, director-general of the Department of Medical Sciences, the 34-year-old man may have been infected with the XJ coronavirus variant, a combination of the BA.1 and BA.2 variants that was first detected in Finland.

Newly reported official COVID cases (24,252) and new COVID deaths (94) both increased on Wednesday over the prior day but remained below record high levels for the year, while serious COVID hospitalizations declined slightly from the prior day’s record high to 1,845.

 

Total COVID cases under care in Thailand also declined for the day to 248,078, down from the year high of 259,126 set last Sunday. The 24,252 new official cases on Wednesday rose from the 21,088 reported Tuesday, but remained well off Thailand’s yearly high of 28,379 from last Friday.

 

The 94 new COVID deaths reported Wednesday was an increase from the 91 reported Tuesday, but remained below the year high figure of 97 from last Sunday and Monday.

 

Serious COVID cases in hospitals declined from the year-high 1,862 reported Tuesday to 1,845 on Wednesday.

 

In a related item, the number of COVID patients hospitalized and requiring intubation to breathe rose by one to 782 on Wednesday, setting a new high for the year.

 

Compared to data from one week ago, Wednesday's new cases count was lower, but daily fatalities, serious hospitalizations and total cases under care were all higher.

 

All in all, Wednesday's report by the Ministry of Public Health was typical for a midweek COVID update, with mid-range new case numbers that usually rise later in the week heading into the weekend.

 

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and intubated patients peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

Now the waiting game begins as far as those leaving the city of BKK and heading to the provinces.  This morning my Car Park under the condo was filled with folks loading up their cars and getting ready to get out ahead of the masses this weekend.  With today being a Government holiday it appears that some folks have decided to add two days of holiday and make it a 10 day mini vacation heading home to see Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa.  Hope the roads stay safe and that the virus does not use this next 10 day period to reinforce itself by spreading freely to the masses.

It's everywhere already, so I hope there won't be much difference. 4 of my family's households have had it independently of each other.  I put no stock in the official case numbers at all.

First report since the 421 cases reported on 1st April and we have a drop in numbers.

 

Health officials on Tuesday (April 5) reported 301 new COVID-19 cases in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, of which 101 cases were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 12 cases were found in Pranburi, 26 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 8 cases in Kuiburi, 19 cases in Thap Sakae, 28 cases in Bang Saphan, 12 cases in Bang Saphan Noi, and 95 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Three new COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the province today.

You're looking at it from the wrong viewpoint. It not spreading between everyone elongates the problem.

 

About a year ago I was looking at it thinking they're never going to get to a herd immunity point as Delta simply doesn't spread fast enough, to get to that stage it's going to need 500k to a million infections per day for an extended period of time. Locldowns, etc disrupt, delay and prevent that process from playing out.

 

With recent developments that's all changed, it's now moving fast enough that I reckon 80 to 90% of the population could become infected and recover in just 3 or 4 months.

 

So long as the hospitals are not overloaded and can handle the 'load' then it's not really a problem.....until a new variant comes along which is different enough - like Omicron - then it will start again.

 

The origins of Omicron are shrouded in mystery though.

Here is the report today showing an increase from 301 cases yesterday.

 

Health officials on Wednesday (April 6) reported 358 new COVID-19 cases in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, of which 91 cases were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 73 cases were found in Pranburi, 40 cases in Sam Roi Yot, 22 cases in Kuiburi, 2 cases in Thap Sakae, 22 cases in Bang Saphan, 99 cases in Bang Saphan Noi, and 99 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Three new COVID-19 related deaths were reported in the province today.

Ten people were listed as being in serious condition in Chonburi currently, either on a ventilator or with pneumonia. Three of them were not vaccinated. According to the Chonburi Department of Public Health, the vast majority of recent cases are mild or asymptomatic at 99.748 percent.

 

The two new deaths were aged 41 and 50 with severe personal health problems and pre-existing conditions. Both of them were vaccinated.

 

It's almost as if it were a different pandemic there and surely a cause for only limited concern!

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,807,908 with 25,788 deaths.
