Thailand reports record high COVID-19 deaths

Thailand on Thursday (April 14) reported 24,134 new COVID-19 cases, 26,997 recoveries and 115 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 3,973,003 with 26,510 deaths.

 

Starting next month, the home isolation period for high-risk individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19 cases is expected to be reduced from a week to five days.

 

According to Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), the National Communicable Disease Committee (NCDC) agreed this week to shorten the quarantine period to five days for those who test positive for COVID-19, plus an additional five days for observation and monitoring their health.

 

Dr Opas said during a media briefing that the decision was made based on information indicating that the Omicron coronavirus variant, which is now the dominant COVID strain in Thailand and many other countries, has a three-day incubation period.**

Despite the arrival of the Thai New Year’s holidays, Thailand on Thursday reported a year-high record total of 115 new COVID deaths, the fifth consecutive day of deaths exceeding 100, along with a slightly increased number of 1,993 COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition.

 

The 115 new COVID deaths reported on the second day of the Thai Songkran holiday period surpassed the country’s prior 2022 high of 108 COVID deaths set last Sunday. The 1,993 COVID cases hospitalized in serious condition likewise was an increase from the 1,971 reported yesterday, but below the year high figure of 2,065 from last Monday.

 

Among the seriously ill hospitalized COVID patients, the government said 846 are requiring intubation to breathe, up from the 834 reported yesterday, but below the year high of 885 from last Tuesday.

 

At the same time, the Ministry of Public Health also reported 24,134 official new COVID cases for the past day, also an increase from the 23,015 reported yesterday. Thailand’s counts of official COVID cases, widely considered an unreliable undercount, have been bouncing above and below 25,000 for the past week.

 

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and the intubated share of those peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

 

This year with the arrival of the Omicron wave, serious case hospitalizations and intubations have been rising steadily since the start of the year, with deaths following a similar but somewhat more erratic upward trend -- patterns that thus far show no signs as yet of having peaked.

And to all a Happy Songkran, muted of course by the Covid spread, and the families in mourning for those lost, especially those lost on the first day of the family celebrations.  To add insult to this Governments decrees it looks like the Thais as well as visiting foreigners have decided waterplay is warranted while the PM himself is not amused per a post in the paper we can not name.  Blaming Foreigners is the tag line.  After over 2 years of no true festivities Thais have become fed up as well as others.  However, we know that the cases will expand further as we trend into next week and the very important metric of those in serious condition, intubated and those who die will expand as well.  

 

Bangkok seemed pretty muted yesterday, however, Asiatique was packed as well as Icon Siam where they were holding a Kite festival, but alas no wind for the kites.  Some of the supposed activities appeared to have been canceled or downsized considerably, probably because of the crowds.  Many of those, mainly foreigners we saw, were running around without masks, of course this was outside.  We did not stay long as there was no social distancing and my better half was tired of getting crushed in between folks.  Not sure why we went out, ah yes the better half decided it was needed as she wanted to pay respects to the Budddah shrines that were set up at each location.  The Wats around those locations were also packed with folks.

In a newspaperthey wrote that maybe 1st of May the Test and Go and Thailand Pass will be binned... I don't understand... With a fe thousand infections everything is in a lockdown and many rules and restrictions for entering Thailand and now after Songkran when they expect to be 50-100k a day things will be binned.....Somebody can explain?

Phuket marks 157 new COVID cases, one more death

 

PHUKET: The latest Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) daily COVID situation report has marked 157 new local infections confirmed across the island yesterday (Apr 13), bringing the total number of infections recorded since Jan 1 to 49,622.

Unfortunately as @TallGuyJohninBKK indicated in a post yesterday, there have been millions infected but not near enough for herd immunity and with Omicron and the other variants I am not sure we will ever see it.

In the two years since it was declared a pandemic, the COVID-19 virus has given birth to many variants and, recently, to recombinants as well. And this has caused the Bangkok Governor to be dressed down by Prayut and told to go out and tell those folks they are breaking the law and could be fined or imprisoned. Prayut was less than amused.

Many cars and people celebrating Songkran on the Ping River, Mae Taeng.  And it looks like a lot of fun.  But I am not going.  Too much COVID here in the North.   Our electrician has it now.  I just feel there is not enough testing to report accurate numbers.  And the word on the street is COVID mak.  And I believe the street more than the official numbers.

Even the Thais now realize the SARS-CoV-2 virus is a minimal threat to public health,  especially with most of the country fully vaccinated, so Covid-19 restrictions can be pared back and/or eliminated.

because they have earlier announced that if infections rise over 100 per day, the Songkran would be cancelled.

So they have started reporting high figures only when it was too late to revert all preparations, there was no CCSA meeting since then to make decisions.

They should scaled down holidays a few months ago, instead they insisted celebrations will go on unhindered.

Later on they have decided no water plays, no alcohol sale at locations of approved celebrations with special permits, and vax certificate checking at entry to large events.

The popular mood is no restrictions for moderate celebrations, but crowding at temples, restaurants, on trains and busses would cause a higher wave of infections, as it did a year ago.

And a very unusual / strange development -- FOURTEEN COVID deaths reported for the day in the NE province of Roi Et (by far the most of any single province for the day).... compared to only five in the vastly larger and more populous province of Bangkok.

 

Normally, for some time now, Bangkok has regularly seen double-digit daily COVID deaths and almost always has more than any other single province on any given day, as would be expected given its relative size/population.

 

Likewise, I think it's pretty rare, at least thus far in this year's version of the pandemic, to have any other province besides Bangkok reporting double digit COVID deaths..  But we had that today in Roi Et of all places for some reason.

 

Curiously, according to the MoPH daily fatality reports, Roi Et didn't have any COVID deaths yesterday, and only one the day before that.... Hmmmm......

That is definitely an anomaly for Roi Et, which in itself is pretty small with just a tad over 1 million people living there.  1.4 deaths per 100K definitely is something to worry about.  If you took that number and extrapolated it for the entire country you get a number of around 980 deaths per 100k which, in my view, could account for the excess deaths we may see.

I'm not sure that this can not be condensed to 98% with serious personal health issues.

 

Age is of course strongly associated with serious health issues, but is not the prime mover imo.

I wouldn't be surprised to see deaths rise. The peasants unfortunate enough to have had Sinovac will have the effectiveness worn off by now and I doubt people will be queuing up for 4 hours in the heat of an Issan temple to be injected with something that makes you sick for 3 days again.

It makes sense, as arriving tourists with a negative test result are more in danger of picking up the virus from locals than the other way round...

Thats the problem, we all know, well at least those of us that have a working brain that the covid case numbers are a farce and an insult to our intelligence, the serious cases and deaths are not so easy to manipulate but certainly not impossible. We can only really judge from the excess deaths figure

Chonburi announces 1,034 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 and two new deaths

 

Twelve people were listed as being in serious condition in Chonburi currently, either on a ventilator or with pneumonia. Nine of them were not vaccinated. According to the Chonburi Department of Public Health, the vast majority of recent cases are mild or asymptomatic at 99.604 percent.

 

The two new deaths were aged 60 and 73, with severe personal health problems and pre-existing conditions. Both of them were not vaccinated.
