The UK can afford to pay the frozen pensions but back in 1948 or 49 the NI funds were NOT ringfenced and are still not so any UK government can use the funds for what they wish.

The income she earned in India was NOT earned in the UK and therefore was not liable to be taxed in the UK.

 

Only spiteful, jealous whiners (mostly from the Labour party) were complaining about it.

 

I belong to another index linked pension groups who actually work on behalf of some 650,xxx pensioners worldwide and NOT just for the expat frozen pensioners in Thailand. My state pension was frozen from the day I got it in 2009 at GBP 399 every 4 weeks.

 

They have been trying for years to get equal pensions for ALL expat pensioners. It has been discussed in the UK parliament and even as far as European courts when the UK PM argued against upgrading.

 

He was called Tony Blair and was the labour party PM. So if you think that the labour party will do the honest thing you are sadly mistaken.

Nobody forced you to leave Little Britain.

You want to have all benefits as those who live there.....

but also living much cheaper in Thailand.

However, this spagat is impossible.

You are not contributing anything like Vat or taxes in UK.

So stay with this what you legally deserve.

Then what about the countries we can retire to and get pension increases, should that stop in your opinion....?

 

My aunt married an American, he lived in the UK for a number of years, paying UK tax & NI. 

 

They moved back to the USA, at the age of 65 he was told he will get a % of a UK pension, INCREASED every year as the USA is on the reciprocal list.  ????

It's about cost of living? For eg housing, food, transport aso you'll spend much less than in UK.

Actually I do pay income tax in the UK on my pensions as many others do.

 

In fact I have been paying income tax since July 1959 when I left school, some 63 years and I will continue until the day that I die.

When you're in Thailand, do you pay taxes there on earnings or income made in the UK?

I can't say for sure that he does......but I would be amazed if he found a way around not paying tax on his UK income......and look forward to hearing how he does it.

The DWP Department of Works and Pensions will notify HM Customs and revenue and they will send you a tax code notice.

I hope you guys get the 10,000 signatures. I cannot help as I am from the US but this post has been up for a few months now, there aren't 10,000 Brits here in Thailand to sign the petition? Don't see why anybody eligible wouldn't sign it. I figured you would have had enough after 2 months.

It's deducted.  Also, all your taxable income is added together for tax.  Normally, State Pension won't be taxed, but the tax due on it will be taken by lowering your tax cade that's applied to those other sources.

Political pressure on her and her husband seems obvious. If her type of arrangements to handling tax are viewed as questionable, the law should be written such that tax avoidance is harder. The reality is they try to accommodate these types.

Sorry to disappoint, but your State Pension as a maximum will be below £10,000 but this at least means you won't have to pay tax on it.

State Pension is always put onto the "List" 1st so you should never be taxed on it but there may be tax to pay if you have any additional income which takes you above your PTA + additional tax reliefs... e.g..

• Any rental Income from property will be added to your State Pension & taxed if you go above the PTA threshold (NB If you've not filled a Non-Resident Landlord form (NR1?) the tax will be withheld by the agent so you're more likely to get a refund & will only pay additional tax if your total income-allowances takes you into a higher tax bracket). 
• More than £1,000 in Interest from bank accounts
• more than £2000 in Dividend income - You may not need to pay this if you're non-resident for tax purposes (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/non-residents-and-investment-income-hs300-self-assessment-helpsheet/hs300-non-residents-and-investment-income-2019) - NB The Dividend voucher will show a "Tax Withheld" amount but this is for the company, not you & cannot be reclaimed even if you don't go above your personal limit 

Each year you will need to file a Self Assessment form to pay (or claim) back tax, this is relatively easy to do online but I use an accountant (£240 per year) as they stay on top of all of the tax changes + ensure I claim any allowances that are due to me (e.g. you can claim a certain percentage of rental income for "Wear & Tear" of furniture in the property, something I never would have known about).
