BANGKOK (NNT) - Barracuda mango prices are seeing a significant spike by as much as 10 baht per kg amid especially high demand for mango sticky rice.

Wattanasak Sur-iam, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said that in addition to higher demand, policies to intervene in the price mechanism and increase distribution channels have also contributed to the surge.

According to the director-general, the situation has helped mango growers to generate more revenue compared to last year.

Top quality barracuda mangos are being sold at prices ranging from 25-35 baht per kg, up from last year’s 22 - 25 baht per kg.

Wattanasak said that his department is working with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) and Thailand Post on a program to further increase distribution channels for fruit farmers.

The initiative allows more than 3,500 factories and companies in 63 industrial estates under the IEAT to pre-order mangos and other seasonal fruits, with Thailand Post providing logistic solutions.

The IEAT will also allocate spaces inside industrial estates for farmers to set up stalls to directly sell their products.

A total of 78 vending booths for barracuda mangos from Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Udon Thani will also be erected in 33 provinces. These three provinces are considered key barracuda mango production hubs.

I really like mango sticky rice but with some cream on it. Is it good for you? Hardly! Too much sugar!

Time to stop buying mango with sticky rice (or sticky rice with mango, as I prefer to call it).

Found them for 29baht/kg at Tesco just yesterday. Not everyone's gouging.
I never buy them from Top/Gourmet/Central.  They are always 79 and up there. Seen them as high as 199 off season.

Just my opinion, Thai mangoes are not even the best, in OZ we grow mangoes in the north they are absolutely better than the Thai ones

Mangos are selling for 25bht/Kg everywhere near me.

As the season progresses they'll drop the price to 20bht/Kg.

Same every year, and this is another bumper crop.

My mango trees are so loaded (4-8 weeks before ripe) they're in danger of falling down.

I had ONE on my tree, one.....  and a squirrel took a good bit of that!

Mrs said they were special mangoes when she planted it.... scarce would be my word!

These are 1+Kg each.

I planted 4 trees (different varieties), 2 are prolific, 2 are sparse.

Luck of the draw ...........

Looks like a jack fruit tree. My neighbour has one that produces loads of fruit the size of rugby balls.... I get a lot of rose apples, (champoon), don't know what to do with them, and most get dug back into he sandy ground.
