Named drivers for EVs's came into force June 1st this year as part of changes to EV insurance

I just renewed my EV insurance, up to 5 named drivers, I added 4 including my 22 & 22 year old daughters, age currently irrelevant.

If we see a major accident that kills a huge number of children due to excessive and dangerous EV vehicle acceleration I would expect immediate mandates from governments  to  liimited the vehicle acceleration

my understanding such a change would be implemented via a software update

My gosh, now the ability of an EV to accelerate faster than an ICEV is a danger!?

If so, then wouldn't the ability of a typical V8 or V6 ICEV to accelerate faster than a typical 4 cylinder ICEV also be danger to children?    Of course any driver who accelerates too fast in whatever machine they are driving....an EV, ICEV, or HEV....could (maybe) be danger depending on the road & traffic situation they are in.

If you haven't driven an EV before you really need to go do a test drive.  Yes, the acceleration/torque of the EV will impress you when you "really push down" on the fuel pedal....you will automatically realize it has a greater acceleration capability than your ICEV.   But it's not like the acceleration is so great the tires are now burning rubber and you are being pressed back into you seat like in a jet fighter taking off.  Oh no, that stuff is for the movies and maybe some anti-EV social media videos.    Instead, it's just a difference you can easily notice in comparison to the ICEV you've been driving.  It was easy for me to notice the difference in my first drive of my BYD Atto in comparison my Toyota Fortuner 3.0 Diesel when really pressing down on the fuel pedal.    And the stopping ability of an EV is better than an ICEV due to the EV regen braking ability combined with the physical brakes....that's a safety plus.

Oh dear...............

Well, some folk here are easily pleased, eh, and also have nothing on topic to offer..........😬

Yesterday went for a test drive in the BYD Sealion 7 AWD. We loved it.

Is fast, but one complaint I have with out Honda CRV 2WD is it has no real passing power if things are mis-judged. It's all right for me as I've been driving a good while and always drop it down manually before I pass. But the Wifey sometimes gets herself passing where she maybe shouldn't  and doesn't just break and drop back in behind the car she is trying to pass. With a more powerful car this would be safer. Just put the foot down and pass.

As was mentioned before BYD have a price increase if no deposit by 10th Dec. Dealer said B100000 more expensive.

Honda would only give us B180000 for our well maintained, very good 2014 Honda CRV 2WD.

If BYD can give us around B300000 we'll put a deposit down today. I don't know the price of second-hand vehicles.

BYD also want an extra B20000 for the charger.

Does that extra 20,000 include installation?  If it does it's a good deal, if it doesn't you'll find them on Lazada from about a third of that.

Thanks, I'll check with BYD.

What do I look for on Lazada:   Home EV Car Charger?

I do plan to put solar into our place, but the whole 3 phase installation and re-routing of cables won't happen for a few months.

EV Charger should start to list them, if you want to start single phase and upgrade to 3 phase later, you'll need a 22Kw 3 phase charger most likely with a Type 2 plug for the car.

Just check it can run on single phase first.

Don't buy an 11Kw charger as it will only charge at 3.6Kw on single phase.

In case you have 1 phase now, be very sure you're better of with a 3 phase system - e.g. if you want to occasionally use VTL, it will be much easier to get whole house power with a single phase system........ that will not be possible with 3 phases.

I think the Sealion charges at 11Kw on 3 phase

Carl previously had 3 phase as we talked about AVR's.

Personally, I prefer single phase at my home, if I was going 3 phase I'd make sure I had everything I wanted running in a power cut on on the same phase.  I would also install 3 ATS transfer switches to switch a failed phase onto a working phase as most of the power cuts we get on this development are a single phase failing.

Good luck with this. BYD is using external second hand Car Dealers, as the Market is almost down better to expect even less than 180.000 THB offered.

I would try and sell your CRV privately at about 250,000.  I just looked at One2Car and they seem to be 300k+ so you need to undercut, advertise on One2car, bahtsold and facebook marketplace.

Slightly off topic - but a direct response to the comment on your Honda.

Never bother trying to get a part exchange here in Thailand - you will always get ripped off as manufactures are simply not interested in them.

A far better option is to sell privately on somewhere such as Facebook Market Place, also list your car on one2car.com

A quick look suggests you should be able to get somewhere around 330,000 baht for your car (when sold privately).

i got an "ok" offer from byd for my 11 years old isuzu ... if i do selling the car private (haven't decided yet) i will get probably 30-50k more ...

I don't think "trading-in" ever really makes good economic sense.

You're right, because they don't want your car, they will offer less than they get from a tent as they want to make a profit on it, oft times they are guessing what a tent will offer them so have to be careful.

I went into a dealership and they offered less than the tent price so I assume the salesperson deducted their own commission for making the call to the tent

I went to a number of tents and was offered a higher price for cash

We're there now. Offered 200000 odd....I said I'm not paying more then 1mill for the Sealion 7.....

guy has just come to look. So B250000 for my CRV gets me the Sealion for 1 Mil.

Will see.

I have a 3 phase ATS to our genset.

If I loose a phase it doesn't matter that much as the phases are wired to share the lights and power sockets also one phase per air-conditioning.

Here is BYD early bird offer which ends 10th December

for the  BYD Sealion 7 AWD the price should increase by B150K

https://www.reverautomotive.com/en/news/byd-sealion-7-price-announcement

within in these prices it includes the EV 3.5 subsidy which currently is B100K for 2024 but will be reduced to B75K for 2025

Have to wait and see if Byd will absorb the B25K subsidy reduction or pass it back to the customer

EV prices may increase in 2025 if Chinese EV manufacturers withdraw from the EV 3.5 subsidy program

EV prices in Thailand are only going in one direction and that's down...the longer you wait, the cheaper they will become.

Last year people were rushing to buy before the EV 3.0 subsidies ended and there was a lot of buyer's remorse.

The Chinese are selling older technology here at much higher profit margins so there's still a lot more room for discounts.

I'm waiting until the prices and technology are more comparable to China.

What do they sell the Sealion 7 (or similar) for in China?

Around 889,188.71 THB for the base model but it's on the much newer and better EVO platform.

Insurance Update ... Current insurers Viriyah just called with their tempting renewal offer for my 2-year old Atto (registered Jan 2023).

Current policy (exp Jan 2025) had premium of THB 24,000 and an insured value of THB 950,000.

For renewal premium of THB 28,000 and an insured value of THB 550,000.

I haven't made any claims this year (car was rear-ended by some tw@t early in the year but all his fault so no cost to Viriyah).

Time to shop around but I suspect other insurers may not differ much.

Roojai will be half that price, if not more.

Thanks. So the Sealion 7 they are selling in Thailand can't be upgraded to the new platform?

It's a hardware update, not a software update?

What is the km range with the new platform and when would updated vehicles probably make it to Thailand?

I think about three years, it’s best to forget about new models and incremental improvements unless they are imminent and this one is not

It's hardware. The main difference is much faster DC charging if using public chargers and improved efficiency.

If looking for an SUV, also check out the Geely EX5, it's a bit cheaper...also Aion V but that looks a bit too cartoon for me.
