Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Last night while doing my nightly viewing of Youtube videos to fall asleep I stumbled across this Thai guy's video on EV lifetime battery warranties offered in Thailand.  He was doing it as part of the Motor Expo 2025 ongoing motor show. The video says so far there are only four EV manufacturers offering lifetime battery warranties who are MG, BYD, GAC, and Wuling.   In the latter half of the video he expresses his view of what "lifetime" really means which basically boils down to 10 years after a  model is discontinued.   The video has an auto-dubbed English sound track...you may need to select the English sound track if your Youtube setup does not do it automatically.

I did some Google AI searches on the battery lifetime warranties offered by MG, BYD, GAC, and Wuling...and quoted those summaries below.  MG's lifetime warranty is the less restrictive in terms of warranty transfer....BYD, GAC, and Wuling have limitations on warranty transferability.   And of course refer to the manufacturers website for latest/full battery warranty details and AI answers may not accurately/fully reflect warranty terms and conditions.

MG Lifetime Battery Warranty

Quote

AI Overview

MG Thailand offers a lifetime warranty on the high-voltage battery, electric drive unit, and power electric box for certain electric models, including the NEW MG4 ELECTRIC, NEW MG MAXUS 9, NEW MG MAXUS 7, and NEW MG CYBERSTER
. This warranty is transferable to subsequent owners and has no mileage limit, providing long-term assurance to both new and existing customers for these core EV components.

What is covered

Who is covered
  • Current and new customers: The warranty is valid for both existing and new owners of eligible vehicles.
  • Transferable: The warranty is not limited to the first owner and transfers with the vehicle to subsequent owners.

Key features
  • No mileage limit: The warranty is valid for the lifetime of the vehicle, regardless of how many kilometers are driven.
  • Applies to specific models: The lifetime warranty is offered on a range of electric vehicle models, including the MG4 ELECTRIC, MAXUS 9, MAXUS 7, and CYBERSTER.

Important considerations
  • Vehicle eligibility: Check if your specific vehicle is included in the program, as it primarily applies to a select group of new electric models.
  • Warranty exceptions: As with most warranties, it is crucial to understand that the warranty will likely not cover damage from accidents, misuse, or unauthorized modifications.

BYD Lifetime Battery Warranty

AI Generated

BYD Thailand offers a "Battery Lifetime Warranty Package" for specific models and timeframes, but it is not a standard, open offer for all vehicles. This package primarily covers the high-voltage battery, drive motor, and motor control unit, and is subject to strict conditions.

Key Conditions and Details
The lifetime warranty is a promotional package that must be explicitly opted into, either for free with a new car purchase during a specific campaign period or purchased for a fee by existing eligible owners.
  • Covered Components: High voltage battery, drive motor, and drive motor control unit (PDC).
  • Eligibility (New Buyers): Primarily for customers who purchased specific BYD Dolphin and Atto 3 models during recent promotional windows (e.g., Nov 28 – Dec 10, 2025).
  • Eligibility (Existing Owners): Existing owners of eligible models (Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion, M6) can purchase this package for 5,000 THB (from a value of 50,000 THB) if their car still meets specific criteria (under 8 years old/160,000 km, all maintenance up to date, etc.).
  • Transferability: The lifetime warranty is non-transferable to subsequent owners, except for a legal spouse. If the car is sold outside of this exception, the warranty reverts to the standard coverage of 8 years/160,000 km for the battery and 8 years/150,000 km for the motor/PDC.
  • Maintenance Requirements:
    • All scheduled maintenance must be performed at an authorized BYD service center using genuine parts.
    • Failing to meet a service interval by more than 1,000 km or one month will void the lifetime warranty.
  • Usage Restrictions:
    • Annual mileage must not exceed 50,000 km per year.
    • The vehicle cannot be used for commercial purposes (e.g., taxi, rental car) or operated outside of Thailand.

Wuling Lifetime Battery Warranty

Quote

AI Overview
Wuling offers a "Passive Lifetime Warranty" on its electric vehicles, specifically covering the power battery, drive motor, and motor control unit. This warranty is subject to certain conditions, such as the vehicle being new and not previously owned, driving under a specified annual mileage limit, and adhering to all scheduled maintenance at authorized Wuling service centers.

What the warranty covers
  • Power Battery: The main battery pack of the electric vehicle.
  • Drive Motor: The electric motor that propels the vehicle.
  • Motor Control Unit: The electronic control unit that manages the motor's operation.

Conditions for the warranty
  • Vehicle Status: The vehicle must be a new, first-hand purchase from an official Wuling dealer and must have never been transferred to a different owner.
  • Annual Mileage: The vehicle must be driven for no more than 30,000 kilometers per year.
  • Maintenance: The vehicle must be serviced regularly according to the schedule at an official Wuling service center.

GAC Lifetime Battery Warranty

Quote

AI Overview
GAC offers a "Lifetime Warranty" on the battery for certain new EV models, but it has several conditions: it is for the first private owner only, requires regular servicing at official GAC centers, limits annual mileage to no more than 50,000 km (except for the Hyptec HT), and prohibits unauthorized modifications. Failure to meet these requirements will reduce the warranty to a standard 8 years or 200,000 km.

Key conditions
  • Eligibility: The warranty is for the original purchaser (first owner) of qualifying models like the AION UT, AION V, AION M8, and Hyptec HT.
  • Servicing: You must have the vehicle serviced regularly at an authorized GAC dealer according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Mileage limit: The car must not exceed 50,000 km of driving per year, with a specific grace period for late services (e.g., an accumulated delay of more than 12,000 km or 14 months). The Hyptec HT model is an exception and has no annual mileage limit.
  • Modifications: Any unauthorized modifications or installations, especially those affecting the high-voltage battery system, will void the warranty.
  • Transfers: If the vehicle is sold to a second owner, the warranty changes to 8 years or 200,000 km, unless the new owner is a parent, spouse, or child of the original owner.
  • Usage: The warranty is not valid for commercial use (e.g., taxi, rental, or ride-sharing).

What happens if conditions aren't met
  • If you fail to meet any of the conditions, the warranty will be downgraded to 8 years or 200,000 km, whichever comes first.
  • This includes late servicing or exceeding the annual mileage limit.

So .. if .. MG included our ZS EV in the lifetime warrant list of cars, it wouldn't last too much longer than the 8 year warranty we have, as the ZS EV model has already be discontinued.   We won't drive that many more kms in the next 10 yrs.   A mere 200k kms, maybe, of something expected to last much longer, barring an oops.

At which time, our battery would surely be extremely obsolete by then, and hopefully a cheaper repair / replacement at that time.   Or as I stated a few times, savage whatever and repurpose to our solar system as ESS.

Assuming any vehicle warranty would effectively expire after 10 year of a model is discontinued probably the best a person could hope for is 10 years past the discontinued date "assuming the vehicle manufacturer actually arranges for 10 years worth of spare parts for discontinued models, don't go out of business, etc.

So, if a person say bought Model XYZ in 2022 with a lifetime battery warranty but the model is also discontinued in 2022 as it was sales-flop then probably the most a person could really hope for would be battery warranty coverage until 2032 "assuming" the manufacturer decided to maintain 10 years worth of spare parts....but if the vehicle was discontinued due to being a sales-flop I don't know if a manufacturer would spend more money on a flop by maintaining 10 years worth of parts in some big warehouse somewhere on Earth.

Another example using my 2023 BYD Atto.  Atto production/model years 2022-2024 have been discontinued.  A 2025 Atto is a considered a new model year/generation.    Now although I expect the Atto model will continue to be around for more years as they are still selling very,  well, for a person who say has a 2023 Atto (a discounted series) then the additional 10 year battery warranty would probably effectively be of no use after about 2033....ten years after buying the 2023 Atto....with the car's basic 8 year warranty expiring in 2031.   So, in such a case the lifetime battery warranty may end up in only providing 2 years of real additional battery coverage beyond the basic 8 year coverage.   A lot might depend on how popular the model was....as the more popular models would probably have a bigger spare parts stockage level along with later model years being backward compatible with earlier model years.

The meaning of "lifetime" in warranties can be a subjective, dependent on this-and-that, opaque, subject to change, etc. type guarantee.   Preaching to the choir I know.

Battery technology is changing so fast, it’s going to be difficult for manufacturers to honour the warranty.

They may simply make more batteries now to fulfill future warranty claims but the batteries have a shelf life and a pack manufactured now but installed in 10 years might only have a SoH of 70%.

I would think they'd stick what ever 50kWh battery they have at the time.   As cheaper and easier than keeping the original batteries around.

I just had the second year service on the Seal, and the total bill including the lifetime warranty was ฿5000

I'm glad (and a little surprised) you were able to signup for the Bt5000 lifetime battery warranty so fast.  Last Friday when I visited my local dealership they said they were still awaiting guidance/docs from Rever which will allow signup....Monday I went back and got the same answer...and today/Wednesday I went back and got the same answer but they did make an appt for me several weeks down the road in hopes they get guidance by then.  Today I also visited two other nearby dealerships and got the same "they are still awaiting guidance/docs" from Rever....can not signup yet.  When I check some BYD Facebook pages I see other people are getting the same "....can't signup yet as the dealership is awaiting guidance/relevant docs from Rever.

Don't you love it....BYD announces the battery promotion on 28 Nov but here on 3 Dec many dealerships are still awaiting guidance/docs from Rever to allow signup.

They called me on the way back from the dealership and asked me to come in tomorrow with my passport, presumably that's for the lifetime warranty.

Wifey was in Mukdahan today and called into BYD, they said not yet, wait a bit and they will call us soon.

Anyone got a legal fix for the BYD SL7 maps problem?

Car is great and the more we drive it the more we like it, but the maps is disappointing.

Still doesn't know where my 'home' is and on the way there it wants me to turn right or left at every little bush track. Whereas Googlee Maps 'takes me home, country road'. 😉

If it's like the Atto nav/map it has a lot to desire....like when you zoom in or out it will not retain your desired zoom setting for long as it automatically resets to a default zoom setting after around 30 seconds---I hate that.   Anyway, I now use use Google Maps running within Dpack....works fine.

Apparently BYD customer complaints that when they go to their local BYD dealership to purchase the lifetime battery warranty the dealership responds with a "Sorry, you can't purchase it yet as we are still awaiting guidance/relevant docs from Rever" has resulted in Rever modifying the sign-up procedure.

Where before a person needed to purchase the warranty by 31 Dec 2025 "which also meant the car needed to be inspected by the dealership"  it's now been modified to a person must still purchase the warranty by 31 Dec 2025 but the required accompanying inspection just needs to be done by 31 March 2026.

Since BYD requires the EV to be inspected (i.e., check the battery/drive motor/etc) along with the warranty purchase I expect the dealerships were telling Rever, "Hey Rever, under your current warranty purchase plan the car needs to be inspected when purchasing the warranty but our service center schedule is full for the next few weeks to months....I can't just magically create thousands of 1 to 2 hour open service slots for the thousands who want to purchase the warranty."

So, according to below 3 Dec 2025 Car250.com news article, BYD has adjusted the warranty signup procedure to where a person must still purchase the warranty by 31 Dec 2025 but the required accompanying  inspection can be accomplished later as long as accomplished by 31 Mar 2026.    I expect once passing the inspection then BYD would issue the warranty docs to the customer.....if the car does not pass the inspection then BYD would refund the Bt5,000 purchase.

P.S.: But I bet if you went to many dealership "today" many of those dealerships would still respond with a "....we are still awaiting full instructions from Rever."   Just yesterday I got that response from three different dealerships I visited here in Bangkok.  I expect a lot will depend on your local dealership such as how busy their service center is.   Although there are a lot of BYD dealership service centers here in Bangkok metro area those service centers have about a gazillion BYD cars to maintain (BYD cars in the Bangkok are everywhere!!!) and open service slots are usually a few weeks to even a few months down the road based on my experience over the last two years.   @JBChiangRai probably got lucky by having his Seal 2 year checkup occur just at the right time....his dealership probably received Rever battery warranty guidance while his Seal was undergoing the 2 year checkup.

They told me yesterday it would be 4 hours.  3 hours for the service and an hour to inspect the car for the lifetime warranty.  I was planning on waiting but when they told me that, I got a Bolt home (about 4km) and came back later on my e-Scooter, which I folded up and put in the trunk.  They thought that was hilarious.

So expect an hour-long inspection to qualify for the lifetime warranty.

They also told me how many times the battery had been charged and asked me to sign many documents.  All in Thai which were meaningless to me.

Yeap, OBD2 data has bunch of battery related info.  Like below OBD2 data showing the total number of times I have charged and also the total number of times charged to 100% for my 2023 Atto I've had since Oct 2023....just using Car Scanner app along with a cheap Bt50 OBD2 dongle bought off Lazada.

Number of times AC or DC charged.  Even if charging for a mere 1 second that counts as a charge time.  Start a charge and then immediately stop the charge and it increases the count increasing by 1...or charge continuously from 0% to 100% over numerous hours increases charge times by 1.

image.png.cd7044ae7063dc5ae41f8aeb604f65ec.png

Number of times charging to 100% via AC or DC.   Must charge to 100% for it to rack up one more count.  Jut charging say to 99.9% does not result in a full charge count.....must reach 100%.  Charge from 0 to 100% results in one more count....or charge from 99% to 100% results on one more count.   Must reach 100% to increase the count by 1.

image.png.1d33e493f3428ddbcc7ad4f90e0834cc.png

And by the way, you should have google translated those Thai language docs that were meaningless to you as those docs were ownership transfer docs to me.   I got tired of just standing in front of your home's big front gate hoping you would adopt me so I cooked-up a deal with your local BYD dealership to arrange the transfer.    😀😶

Great, you can take care of my expensive daughters too!

I’m at the Deepal showroom, they service my daughter’s Suzuki Ciaz today.

There is a new model for 2.1M THB, the Performance model if I’m reading it right is only 218 PS.  The first think I noticed was the 21” wheels.

Also the K50 electric pickup truck, no price displayed but the interior is stunning.

It's quite a savvy move from BYD, they are essentially killing the second hand market with these non-transferable warranties and almost forcing customers to buy new.

Or providing customers a reason to hang onto their BYD for longer than 8 years...delaying their next new car buy.

For manufacturers it's like being caught between a rock and hard place.  If they "don't" offer a lifetime battery warranty it can hurt sales by losing market share to competitors who do offer a lifetime warranty.....and if they "do" offer a warranty it can hurt future sales volume.   Guess a decision has to be made as to which way hurts the less (or helps the most).

With a lifetime battery guaranty, a lot of time must be spent reading the small print, ya never know.............:whistling:

Great, perhaps you post it here to have a read............

I just came back from visiting the Motor Expo 2025 for the second time this week....visited on Monday and today/Thursday.   On today's visit I spent most of my time looking at some models I was most interested in.   Just so many different new brands and models it can overload the brain.  All the various Chinese brands like Deepal, Chery, GAC, GWM, MG, Zeekr, BYD, Omoda, Jaecoo, Aion, etc., have so many new models.

Oh yea, the fossils Toyota and Honda have some new refreshed models like the Toyota bZ4X BEV (giggle, giggle).

But having them all in one place can sure help a person get-up-to-speed on all brands/models now available and greatly help a person to narrow down their list vs trying to visit numerous dealerships.

Right now based on my Monday and Thursday motor show visits and a visit to a Zeekr dealership on Wednesday I'm seriously considering a Zeekr 7X Long Range RWD or Performance (AWD)....most likely the Long Range RWD.   Charging capability-wise these guys come with 22KW AC charging and 430KW DC charging capabilities.  And their interior is just awesome.    But I'll wait until at least early 2026 before I pull the trigger on any new car buy...hopefully  competition will force some more price cuts.  Price cuts probably not as big and widespread as this year/2025, but still price cuts.....maybe some more brands will jump on the lifetime battery warranty bandwagon.

The way I understand the 'times of full power' is equal to the cumulative charging to 100% - in other words, to use your example of charging to 99.99999% - does not really matter because as soon as you hook up the next time and add 0.00001%, your charge cycle count will go up by one. Or 40 to 100% is not a full cycle, but if you go 20 to 60% next, the combination of the two is one cycle.

These cycles are what the battery manufacturers  use to define battery life of e.g. 3,000 cycles.

Yea...agree....a complete charge cycle for lifetime determination purposes is when total charge adds up to 100%.....example: 0 to 100% is one charge cycle....a 0-50% charge followed by another 50% charge equals one charge cycle.

However, the "times off full power" image I posted earlier increases by 1 count only when SOC hits 100%.  If I charge from 0 to 100% it will increase by 1....if I charge from 50 to 100% it will increase by 1.....if I charge from 99 to 100% it will increase by 1.....if I charge numerous times say from 10 to 90% it will "not" increase the count.   I did tests quite a few times to confirm.  That just how this particular BYD OBD2 data element counts.

Based on how it counts if I had "never" charged to 100% while having the car the "times off full power" could possibly still be zero.   I say zero because another data element shows the "Factory SOC as 64%"which means the battery left the factory with a 64% SOC....and if by chance the factory did not test the battery to 100% SOC then it could have left the factory with a "times off full power" of zero.

Now with specialized OBD2 retrieval/testing equipment I'm sure more detailed battery data is available....and I have no doubt BYD keeps some of BYD OBD2 proprietary in nature that only their specialized equipment and software can retrieve.

I wonder if the lifetime warranty document says something like "Normal Use" and high cycles with low kilometer might be considered abnormal?

I was surprised they should me these 2 numbers yesterday, it was on their paperwork.

Half way through first 6 days ! Car reservation total in the 42nd Motor Expo 2025 (28 Nov – 3 Dec 68) : Total 24,044 cars | 1st place Toyota 4,112 cars followed by 2nd place BYD 2,303 cars and 3rd place Honda 1,985 cars.

Based on your posts above I'm a little confused on what "two" numbers they showed you.    I'm plenty clear they showed you a number reporting "how many times the battery had been charged" but I'm unclear on what the second number was based on your second post.  Can you clarify for me?   Thanks.

  • Popular Post

One number was how many times the car was charged (to any degree), the other was the number of battery cycles.

I got the warranty document for the lifetime warranty.  It is transferrable between spouses and legal sons/daughters.

They agree to replace the battery with another of not lower SoH, it may be used, drive electronics and motors are also covered.

My translation below.
