BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) – Deputy Agriculture Minister Manunya Thaiseth said the Department of Agriculture will give two cannabis plants to each household or altogether 1 million plants. Registration for the free plants will start on June 16.

 

Opening a fair on cannabis at the Chang International Circuit in Muang district of Buri Ram, Miss Manunya said the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives through the Department of Agriculture would hand out 1 million cannabis plants or two plants to each interested family as cannabis, hemp and Kratom plants were removed from the narcotics list of the government on June 9.

It's an established fact that THC affects the developing brain and shouldn't be taken by young adults and it is also an established fact that taking THC in quantities sufficient to get high has a biphasic & reinforcing link with depression and other mental illnesses, I saw many such cases in the UK volunteering one day a week as a magistrate.

 

My concerns are how will Thailand stop young adults with developing brains from taking it? and what facilities will Thailand make available to cope with the mental health issues we're going to be seeing? locking them up is not the answer.

 

I don't see any link between recreational cannabis and harder drugs, but drug driving is definitely an issue in the UK.

I always said the army and the cops are the two biggest cartels in LoS. After all I bought my weed from a cops adult son, and my missus knew a charming young neice of some general who sold ya ice on campus under his "protection"  so this news is apropos.

Having known 3 people in my younger years all heavy tokers who died of brain haemorrhages before the age of 50 there might  be something in the physical effects as well.

What could possible go wrong?

How many cases of alcohol related crime did you see by comparison? 

How does the world successfully manage keep alcohol away from young and under age people for the most part, or on the other hand, deal with its damage to drinking age youth? 

It's a deadly and highly addictive drug with exactly the same addiction ratio as heroin and meth, yet we manage!

Moral panic and legal remedies are not the answer to your legitimate  observations regards drug harms, and never will be.

I can think of better places to be when stoned than at the controls of a vehicle. It ruins a mellow mindset!

And interestingly, a Dutch study found stoned drivers to be more cautious (paranoid) than even sober sensible ones. 

What we will see is booze AND weed related mayhem, but of course the weed will be the "evil twin" when the media get hold of it. Incidental to that, rare is the Thai headline "Driver slams into someone's rear at a red light -alcohol blamed" it's always "the brakes" innit?

I agree with you regarding moral panic and legal remedies. The government here is trying to stop people from under 20 taking it, and you can only do that through the law, which they recognise.  I’m concerned about people getting high and mental health issues, Thailand is ill equipped to deal with it.  On the whole, I’m in favour of decriminalising cannabis and some other drugs.

 

To answer your question on alcohol related crime, I saw at least a 10 fold increase with alcohol, especially violent crime late at night, specifically at pubs and clubs and of course the inevitable driving over the legal limit.
 

I never saw any violent crime with ecstasy (MDMA), in fact we saw an incredible reduction in violent crime around the clubs that were known to favour that over alcohol. Clubs like Camden Palace you would expect to see 10-12 alcohol fueled assaults from an audience of 7,000, we knew they sold practically no alcohol and the club ran on ecstasy, but we had no assaults to deal with, not ever.  I think the police let sleeping dogs lie.  I can’t help wondering if we missed an opportunity to licence that and control its purity, maybe we could have avoided the occasional death we saw on the news.

I am not sure about promoting the wide use of Cannabis. I have a younger brother who has been a user of marijuana for over 30 years.  I do not know what  type of or how strong the stuff he smoked for most of his life was  but he always looked lethargic and had low energy most of the time.  He often complained he was just too tired to work  His main job in life was selling guitars at a musical equipment store. Having a conversation with him was useless.  The only time he ever called me was to ask for money.  We do not talk anymore.  

 

The concept of recreational use of Cannabis sounds about as good as those who calk themselves  "I'm just a social drinker".   I sometimes enjoy a beer or a glass of wine but not having a drink does not bother me.  But in my brothers case he got really desperate for money when he needed it.  Thankfully he never graduated up the scale into harder stuff.  Yes, he is an addict.  An addict with a wife and son.  

 

For some a daily joint is like a beer after work.  For others it can lead to a lifetime of problems.  The other issue I saw was pre employment drug tests(they have those in LOS?).  I used to know a Human Resource person who told me more and more job applicants are failing drug tests.  She suspected it was the wide use of cannabis in California.  About a year ago I stayed at a hotel in Southern California and that certain odor was really strong in this place. This was not a cheap hotel and the average per night was $120.  I almost got a contact high. I'm all for freedom of choice and it is your body and do what your want but there could be unintended consequences.

Why is the driver tested 'being over the legal limit for driving'  despite been in what was found to be an unroadworthy car and having witness testimony that he was showing off, your take out from the article?
