UK government gateway - authenticate code?

Featured Replies

I recently changed my mobile phone and SIM card number.  Now the Authenticate app no longer receives the code/synchronises with the UK government gateway website to allow me to log into that website.

I've forgotten how I synchronised the Authenticate app when I first installed it on my old mobile phone.  I can't find any details about this either on the gateway website.

Can someone please remind me how I add the UK government gateway website to my Authenticate app?  Thanks.

When I set up the UK Government Gateway many years back, the online authentication process that fitted my 'international gypsy' status was via Barclays Bank that I didn't even have an account with. I only needed it the once (I think it was for my DL renewal) so not even sure if it still works or is supported?

I did a Google search and these two wiki's suggest that Government Gateway was supposed to be superseded by GOV.UK Verify but both appear to be on a government back-burner... no big surprise there eh? Government Gateway is referenced in the past tense and it looks like Barclays and some earlier participants in the authentication rigmarole have abandoned it.

No longer available (but still Active?!) so that may explain why it stopped working in Authenticate app?

It references the following:

Doesn't even give a url but refers you to:

Maybe start over with GDS will be easiest. I haven't heard of the Authenticate app before.

I'm presuming you can still log on using a OTP. Once you're go to 'your profile' and select 'change sign in details'. Then choose 'how to get access codes.

Once there locate 'Authenticator app' and select change. You should now see a QR code. Show that QR to your authenticator and your account and the authenticator should pair up.

Sorry, I mean this website:

https://www.access.service.gov.uk/login/signin/creds

I know my gateway ID and password, but the next page asks me to enter my Authenticate app access code.  There has never been any OTP option, only the requirement to  enter the access code.  There is a technical helpdesk phone number, so I'll try to call them later...

I've never used the app so that may be the reason, but when I enter my User ID and password I get this screen giving me the choice of OTP or APP.  Do you not see this?

If you see the "You can get help" that also looks like it could allow you to change to OTP.

Which does include the following highly pertinent (in our case) statement under the Evolution heading:-

"HMRC ceased to use Verify, which had been available for a limited number of online services in parallel with Government Gateway sign-in, with effect from April 2022"

Assuming that this was, indeed, the case, it strikes me as highly unlikely that the Gateway will be going away any time soon, at least insofar as our dealings with HMRC are concerned.

Might also be worth mentioning that an attempt I made to register with Verify some time ago proved unsuccessful because I didn't have a UK address.

It is good to have the Authenticator app with access codes as backup in case you can't receive the OTP.
