PM Delays Power Fee Hike

BANGKOK, Aug 9 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha shelved a plan to raise the electricity fee for the September-December period to protect people, government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said.

 

The spokesman said that on Aug 8 Gen Prayut discussed the electricity fee with the Energy Ministry and the Energy Regulatory Commission and they agreed that the electricity fee would be unchanged in August.

 

For the September-December period, the government would subsidize the fuel tariff in the electricity fee to help households and vulnerable groups of people.

Electricity rate for August frozen to ease burden on low-income households

 

 

The Ministry of Energy and the Energy Regulatory Commission agreed, at their joint meeting yesterday (Monday), to freeze the electricity rate for August after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed concern that the increase in the fuel tariff (FT), which will drive up the price of electricity, will impact a lot of people.

 

As for the electricity rates for September to December, Energy Permanent Secretary Kulit Sombatsiri said that the government will discuss, with the commission, measures to ease the burden on the public, especially low-income households, in case electricity rate is allowed to increase.

 

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said today that subsidies have to be provided by the government in case the fuel tariff is frozen.

With Inflation rampant in Thailand now, any rise in the cost of Electricity would only add more fuel to the fire of Inflation, and see the Government have pressures from Outflows of Foreign Capital and Stock sell offs,

IMO Inflation will be at about 11 % by year end, and there is very little the Govt will be able to do in raising Interest rates as this will put people into NPL very quickly such is the level of borrowing with Household Debt at about 100 % of GDP.

Therefore it is something the population will have to suck up, and that includes any costs from Electric , Diesel and Gas .

Populations don't just have to suck it  up. They can tear it all down. See Sri Lanka. That is why controlling electricity prices is important and the right thing to do.

Up here in Northern Thailand we have the Mae Moh Power Plant which is fueled by a lignite coal mine occupying an area of 135 square kilometers near the plant.

Now, the world leaders are falling over each other jacking up the price of energy and blaming the Russian SMO in Ukraine.  OK.  I understand when EU leaders sanction Russia by cutting off their own supply of coal, gas, and oil from Russia.  They are "punishing Russia" and it will totally blow-back on average EU commoners.  Well, let them eat cake and wear more sweaters.

But here in Thailand?  This country is pretty well energy independent.

So the question becomes - why is the Prayut government raising the price of energy. 

By the way, i can't wait to see PTT's income statement and profit column for 2022.

This is a good thing for a lot of people and helps the poor more than the rich.

 

Texas utilities have tripled in the past two years because Republican politicians allow the rich natural gas and oil companies do whatever they want to do. And accept  their huge campaign money and free luxury trips. 
 

At least this guy is doing something for the poor and average families.

Yup. General Generous has also pledged to raise the Thai minimum wage also.
