BANGKOK, Aug 9 (TNA) – The cabinet approved the Airport City project that will be implemented in the Eastern Economic Corridor and will serve visiting travelers and businesspeople with comprehensive tourist services and recreational activities, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said.

The prime minister said Airport City would be built on a 1,032-rai land plot in the EEC for aviation (EECa) area which would be a free trade zone. There will be facilities for around-the-clock services including five-star hotels, department stores, duty-free shops, MICHELIN-starred restaurants, exhibition and convention halls and entertainment complexes.

The cabinet approved a proposal from the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) Policy Committee yesterday (Tuesday) to upgrade the status of the EEC from a “special economic zone”to a “free trade zone”, in which incentives, such as income tax breaks, further easing of employment restrictions for foreigners, VAT exemption for tourists buying goods there and permits for 24-hour of recreational activities and liquor sales will be granted to businesses in the area.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said that, according to the EEC Policy Committee’s proposal, the airport in the EEC will be upgraded to a world-class airportand an aviation and logistics hub for the ASEAN region.

To achieve this, she said that several laws, such as those covering customs and excise, will have to be amended, adding that businesses in the so-called “aviation city” will be exempt from corporate income taxes for up to 15 years and their dividends will not be treated as taxable income.

Other incentives include 24-hour liquor, sales 24-hour “recreational activities”, a customs checkpoint for the import and export of liquor and tobacco, a tax free zone and a bonded warehouse.

A 24 hour Nana Plaza..................

Can't wait..one of these soul sucked out master plan towns like China or Korea that look like a circuit board from above.

Watch out for the stampede.

All this at an airport that has been shuttered for the last nearly 3 years.

In 10 years of flying out of Utapao many dozens of time, I have NEVER been on a full flight from there.  75% full is max I've ever seen.

So where will the demand for this 'Airport City' come from?

However, seeings that it's only a 15 minute drive down the nearly empty Highway 7 extension from me, I am very interested in this "sales 24-hour 'recreational activities'" portion of the plan.  What sort of 'sales' are we talking about here?  :D :D

Pie in the sky and go-go bars.

Ah, Prayut is trying to make the Eastern seaboard attractive to all those quality tourists, presently from India and the Sands of the Dunes ...... keep up the good work then!
Sure is, that some of his "team" show up with empty purses and wallets which can be filled in the same exercise ????

That is the new terminal 3 at U-tapau which has apparently been given the go ahead and will start soon.

And there is a development plan for a smart city, but it does not seem to be where they depict on that picture. It is in an area loosely bounded by Phala and Payoon roads easy and west, and the railway line and the beach  north and south, but this shows directly adjacent to the new terminal 3., watch this space i guess!
