1FinickyOne
I have a friend who wants to live aboard a ship while traveling the islands... He wants to buy a small boat. What are the dangers or problems related to this?

Popular Post degrub
Engine, fuel leak, petrol, … has your friend ever lived aboard a sailboat before for an extended time ? is this solo or with “crew” ? buy a boat. Watch the money go down the drain for the continual maintenance and refit. 6
Popular Post spidermike007
Boat ownership requires high maintenance costs. Hopefully your friend is very affuent. Security would be my primary concern. What happens to the boat when he wants to spend time on land? He would likely have to use a marina part time and they are an extreme lack of marinas here, except in Phuket. 2

PJ71
If he can afford this type of boat i don't know why he wouldn't just go to islands and stay in nice hotels for his travels, way less hassle. But each to his own...
steven100
yes ... I'd be very worried about one's own security & safety .... more and more yacht going folks are getting robbed and kidnapped for ransom every year. It would probably be quite appealing for a couple of hours but that's about it.

Popular Post degrub
I have been told stories by Thai friends whose family were commercial fisherman that pirates were an issue for them near Cambodia and Vietnam. The Straits of Malacca have always had that reputation, but I don’t have any direct information. 2

Popular Post phetphet
Wasn't there a case where the husband was murdered on a yacht somewhere north of Phuket about five years ago? I think the wife was sleeping and some robbers boarded the boat. He disturbed them and was killed and his body thrown overboard. I think running costs will be going up sharply at the moment due to ongoing world crisis.

Well, I am asking so that wise folk on the subject can pass along information as to the dangers... which I can pass along to him... he is not your typical guy... fearless to the point of maybe having a death wish... you have an extra bedroom or not?

You need to register the boat with the Marine Dept. who will inspect the boat for safety and then annual inspection . 1
