New gasoline engines for older cars - OBD capabilities

Featured Replies

Some folks replace the gasoline engine of their car when the car is very old, car has achieved enormous kilometers, engine is lacking in efficiency/power etc. (I'm meaning cars purchased before On Board Diagnostics became available/popular/mandatory.)

My question: Do new replacement engines (for much older models) or renovated engines (for much older models) nowadays automatically have OBD capabilities?

And, if not, can a similar analysis be achieved using different methods/equipment?

(My main interest is diagnosis that might lead to the cause of a new engine in a very old Honda car using way too much gasoline. We went back to the mechanic shop that bought/fitted the new engine and asked. Can't get any sensible answer.)

What engine was fitted.?

Carb or fuel injectors. ?

Can the ECU of it has one be plugged into for computer analysis.?

Fueling shouldn't be difficult to resolve.

The diagnostic features would be the same as the vehicle was fitted with at the time of manufacture.

If the car is very old and has no OBD capability at all then there is a variety of test equipment that can be hooked up to the car ('engine analyser' and exhaust gas analyser etc).

Thanks.

New engine direct from manufacturer in Japan (name not known).

New engine has carburettor.

Access to modern onboard plugin analysis is not fitted.

Car now at Pro Auto, Khun Ton's staff doing some other forms of modern analysis.

Khun Ton following up a lead of a possible small fuel pipe leak, his mechanic says possibly leaking when engine is running but not leaking when engine not runnin/not warm ??

Full report tomorow, we wait and see.

Well if the engine is running well and exhaust not backfiring, all the connections and new fuel lines from the fuel pump to Carb needs to be Checked, so it sounds like it should not be too bigger problem.

Is the Carb new.?

Yes, new carb bought with new engine.

  • (Old engine had a 'backyard' injector system fitted; son took the car to a mechanic shop recommended by a work buddy (in CM) for them to take a look and give a report / recommendation of what work was needed, late next day he went back and old carburettor gone and 'backyard' injector system had already been fitted.)

There's no backfiring at all, fuel lines being checked now.

Sounds good no worries too much, once the leaks are sorted away ya go.

Mileage or kilos with Carb machines vary on the weight of your boot on the accelerator pedal. ????

If your spending that kind of money why not get LPG fitted, Carburettors have not been used for a very long time my 23yr old NV has fuel injectors no carb but throttle tube.

Thanks, but my family makes it's own decisions on the surrounding family factors of the time. You're of course entiled to an opinion.
