Chadchart apologizes - cars submerged at condo as Bangkok's governor blames rain

Bangkok's relatively new governor Chadchart Sittipunt apologized to Bangkokians after pictures showed a whole load of cars submerged at a Bang Khen condo parking lot.

 

Chadchart said that the BMA had many cases to handle due to the lashings of rain handed out to the Thai capital so far this year. 

 

He was unable to get and fix all that was wrong. 

 

The rainfall was heaviest in Bang Khen, a northern suburb. 

 

Thai Rath also reported on severe flooding in the far north of the country in Chiang Rai, Mae Sai border area, overflowing rivers in Chiang Mai province and further flooding in Khon Kaen in the NE and Sa Kaeo in the far east.

‘Blames the rain’

 

Nothing to do with lack of planning and preparation from officials. Nothing to do with chronic corruption which sees public funds disappear into a block hole with little to invest in infrastructure.  Nothing to do with a lack of personal responsibility from people to take care of their neighbourhoods and stop others from dumping trash in canals and drains. 

 

Not their fault, of course. It's the rain's fault.

It, above ground parking, was one of the first things I looked at when shopping for a condo in BKK after living here during the flood of 2011.  My Condo's parking structure starts above the ground floor and has 10 floor of parking, which are always full.  The 11th floor is part of the parking garage but is also where the condos workers have a break room and such.  No way my car will ever be submerged like the OP photo.

Poor old Chachart, He must have gotten his superman cape tangled up this time. Normally he would have jogged over to that condo at 4am with his junior sidekicks and the media in tow and personally sucked the water out of that basement with a super straw.

The problem goes back decades when developments such as high rises, shopping centres and motorways were built and where there were streams, rivers and natural water drainage, they were all filled in and covered with concrete. So the water has nowhere to go. And therein lies the problem. There is no way to fix it and Bangkok keeps on sinking !

he is of course 100% correct....lets face it ...if it hadn't rained it wouldn't have happened so its a no brainer...it is the rains fault.

Yes the condo developers should take some of the blame but so should previous Bangkok Governors, who decided that the path of least resistance (for themselves) would be to ignore the problem, despite being aware of it.

 

One could hardly blame Chadchart, as he has only been the Governor for less than 4 months, the problem was inherited from all of the previous Bangkok Governors who have,'t bothered to address this problem.

Granted, it is most likely that if the floods hadn't happened this year, Chadchart would have probably swept the problem under the carpet as well but he cannot take the blame for his predecessors inaction and incompetence.

I've been in Thailand for 25 years, and I do believe every governor has promised to fix the flooding and traffic problems in Bangkok.  None has, none will.

The condo developer should have the full permission from the city to build.

So many new developments going up but with little thought to future consequences of infrastructure supporting such developments.

If city planners did their jobs correctly these issues would be minimal..

See now if I lived in a condo with an under ground car know to flood during heavy rains.... well I would likely move my car to another spot.

To me a better option than blaming someone else.
