Sanook Thai Caption: Cap: Let out of prison

The Department of Corrections said that Wiwat or "Top" - one of the protesters who was jailed following demonstrations in the Laksi area of Bangkok in 2014 has been released from jail.

Wiwat - also known as the "popcorn shooter" - had been held since the incident at the Laksi intersection on February 1st 2014 when Akaew was shot dead and three people were grievously injured.

The Supreme Court gave him a sentence of 37 years 4 months but he was let out Thursday, reported Sanook.

The Laksi area had been declared an area of internal security and the incident involved a gun battle between government opponents and supporters a day before a general election.

Elsewhere in the media it was reported that he earned the title of "popcorn gunman" because photos in the media showed him firing rounds from a rifle hidden inside a bag of popcorn.

The violence at Laksi was one of several incidents that ultimately led to the coup of 2014 mounted by the General Prayuth Chan-ocha.

It would be nice if the reasoning behind this was explained somewhere.

At face value, this reduction looks both ridiculous and unjustified.

How does a rifle fit into a bag of popcorn???

Not sure,  but most of us can hide a pistol in there quite well.

Don't get too serious about it, and if unsure ask a few people who were in Thailand at the time, they might take the time to answer such a corny question.

I would love to hear the justification for this ridiculous adjustment to his sentencing ......

He must have been a really good guy in the pokey.
